Hey hackers. The time has come were I need to know all my options for a reverse gear for my honda vtx1800/ural hack. I am riding my bike more and more with rising fuel costs and the only thing I can't live without in my life right now is a reverse gear! I would gladly appreciate any engineer/fabricators one offs. They can sometimes be the best. I have friends who make up a very high tec engineering company and can fabricate anything. Thanks in advance and feel free to email at gliderookie@yahoo.com

What are the odds against adapting the GL reverse system to the VTX?

Just wondering,

I'm no engineer, but I've been on a lot of freight trains.

I'm in a wheelchair and the whole pushing my very heavy bike out of the garage is a pain. Also, I'm moving and if the next garage is at the bottom of a hill then that'll just make things extra sporty.

Sorry about the smart a-- reply. Until you get the reverse figured out, maybe you could build an inclined parking ramp in your garage just to make backing out easier.

I've owned a GL1500 and have also looked closely at and ridden several VTX's. IMHO, there's no possible way that the GL 1500 or GL1800 reverse could be adapted to a VTX. It's not a bolt-on unit. The electric reverses on those machines, like that on the K Model Touring BMW's, are part of a total design package that takes into account the design of the crankcase, the starter and the necessary linkage.

A workable approach would be to use a seperate battery with a car starter motor that could be engaged to the sidecar wheel. I've seen such a system described in a post some time back on this website.

I think the link below is the one gnm 109 is talking about.

You will have to do some looking but it is there.

Check with Claude (Swaybar) here. He is building a touring rig for me and one of the features is a reverse built using a Harbor Freight 12 volt winch.
