Renting a sidecar
I am side car enthusiast from Sweden with a BMW R 100 RS, 1983, with an EML on the side. My wife and I would like to rent a sidecar in New York area and take a ride along the east coast up to Nova Scotia in Canada and back. Do they rent side cars in New York or my be Boston?
I am not sure if they would rent a sidecar but you might try contacting Ural of New England www.uralne.com in the Boston area. You should probably also ask your question on the ADV rider "hacks" section. www.advrider.com There is a rental company called Eagle Rider, I doubt they have any sidecars but you could rent a Harley trike or a Can-Am if you want three wheels.
Great, thank you very much for the information. I love to ride solo but my wife refuse, but she loves the sidecar. Happy Easter!
Something else to consider: possibly rent a solo rig for yourself and rent a trike for your wife! Far as I know there are no 'special skills' needed to ride a trike like there are with a sidecar and they are much easier to ride than a solo bike for an inexperienced rider or beginner.
My beighbor bought a Harley trike last year so he and his wife could take short trips. She never rode a motorcycle in her life. Next she suggested he teach her to pilot it 'Just in case something happens to you when we're out riding...'
Well, two weeks ago I was rewiring his old '92 Harley solo rig and he's installing new tires etc. so he can get a chance to ride again. Problem: now that she learned to ride the trike he never gets a chance to ride it! He's 74 years old and she is 73. Never know, your wife might love riding her own trike!
There are different skills to riding a trike! I know of at least one person who thought that there were not, She was dead with in a mile of picking up her new trike from the Honda dealer that built it.

Xcelerate quote: "Far as I know there are no 'Special skills' needed to ride a trike".
Single track vehicles handle much differently than multitrack vehicles. No more countersteering, no more easy bank into the turns, Centrifical forces can topple them either way in a fast turn with just a light tap on the front brake if they have a single front wheel. The Can-AM types with two front wheels handle more like a car and are more stable.
For safety reasons three wheel bike training is offered for both sidecar and trike operators.
THERE ARE SPECIAL SKILLS INVOLVED WITH A THREE WHEEL MOTORCYCLE RIG. MANY HAVE CAPSIZED WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING.
This is especially true of solo motorcycle riders with a lot of miles in the saddle. Newbies do better on three wheelers since they don't have a lot of muscle memory to unlearn. In a panic situation people will react with what reflexes they are used to.

What kind of Honda dealer would allow their customer to ever leave the dealership without proper driving instruction with a trike. I hope they nailed his butt to the barn door! With proper instruction trikes are very safe and the numbers prove it but like any vehicle good instructions is necessary or accidents can happen.

Okay, okay, THERE ARE SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED FOR RIDING A TRIKE! Get instructions.
As I mentioned above, MY NEIGHBOR TAUGHT HIS WIFE HOW TO RIDE THEIR TRIKE FIRST before she rode it. Honestly though, if a person can't figure out that they need to learn to ride whatever it is they are going to ride then they really should not ride anything, ever. They're too stupid to start with!
Rule #1 - SLOW DOWN
Rule #2 - Take you brain with you every time you ride
Rule #3 - Know your limits as a rider
Rule #4 - Do not ride faster than you know how to ride
Rule #5 - Know the limits of any vehicle you ride or drive
Rule #6 - Stay within the known limits of vehicle and rider/driver
On second thought regarding rental, it would be better if you were BOTH on trikes. That way the experienced 2W solo rider doesn't encourage the inexperienced 3W trike rider into a high speed disaster.
Unfortunately the internet commandos and loud mouthed braggarts in the real world always give the impression that if you aren't sparking and grinding off the foot pegs or flying the chair or all crossed up sideways at speed on a trike then you aren't having any REAL FUN and just haven't lived yet. Yeah? Well you just haven't died yet either.
I own a trike. I ride a trike. There is only ONE SPECIAL SKILL - SLOW DOWN!
You can rent can am spyders from a dealer in NewHampshire, But I don't know of any sidecar rentals up here.
No matter how many wheels, and how they are located on the rig, I will for sure take it easy. Thanks all of you for your interest in my question!
Pray a safe trip for you guys whatever you decide, Viking! Sorry for any confusions here. There's much to see so enjoy the country, you are very welcome here!
