It doesn't seem possible that it was only July 2011 when I posted the post below about riding the Heintooga Round Bottom Road in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I had just completed a four day trip with my son in our 2007 Ural Gear Up and it was, in my mind's eye, a great trip that would be the benchmark for many more to come with my son. It was however the last trip for us as what followed was selling the Ural a few months later and a very long and bitter divorce from a woman I married in 1987 but no longer knew. There were no winners. After 2.5 years however I made the decision to get another Ural, and placed my bet on a 2014 Patrol and the new road Ural is traveling with the fuel injection. A few rides around the neighborhood, with requisite practice flying the chair, and then off to work. I had all the joy one experiences in driving a sidecar rig and none of the worries that come from wondering "can I do this without killing myself?" I felt like I'd finally recovered a part of my soul and it's good to be back!

As for the Patrol....it's been great so far but has a long way to go before being broken in....it took about 6 months for me to get the bugs out of my 2007 Gear Up and I expect this will be similar. Sidecar brake adjustment is needed as it overheated in city traffic and locked up on me, and the odometer quit working at 89km. 🙂 Speedo and trip meter work so I suspect a loose connection somewhere but hey, it's a Ural which means it's easy to fix.

I just started with three wheels in Jan and still getting the Patrol just the way I want it. Just ordered 2 inch riser adjustable front and back. Got all the storage boxes and fuel mounted so ready to hit the road slowly as I have always been a two wheel rider but figure I can ride anything. Got around 150 km on it now so still breaking it in and adjusted for my 67 year old body.

Gary - Ural's are a blast, particularly the Patrols and Gear Ups. As the kilometers go up...so does the performance. My 2007 Gear Up seemed like a different rig altogether at 2500 km....then again at 6000. Great rigs and just down right simple and fun.
