How far would you let the rear tire wear on your rig before replacing it?

I change as recomended by the manufacture. Dunlop as an example, says go to new when a Lincoln penny inserted into groove upside-down, tread depth below the top of his head. Most have wear bars.Unfortunately, hacks tend to eat rear tires as you know.....if I'm gonna play,I gotta pay!

The Dunlops are probably one of the hardest tires and as a result give longer wear I use the Elite IIs. 401, 402, and police tires are supposed to wear well. New tread depth is shallower than some tires (like Metzeler) but the tread life is longer.

Well, the one I have on now is showing the steel cord so I guess that is about it for that tire. The tire was a Metzeler Tourance V. 17". But do to other commitments I haven't ordered a new one to replace it or have ridden yet this year.

On our XS1100/Motorvation Formula II rig we have had good results with the Dunlop K491. Also ran this tire on our 78 GL1000/Watsonian Palma with good results. Do no tget the K591!

I'm currently getting 6500 - 6800 miles from the Dunlop K491 on the rear of my rig.
I have a 1970 Moto Guzzi Ambassador powered by a 955cc Eldorado motor and a Coupe Royale sidecar. Due to the weight and extreme amount of wind drag with the enclosed car I am running quite a bit more than normal toe-in. I'm sure is reducing tire life but I'm pleased.

I just ran a Dunlop Police tire the entire length of US 60 (VA to CA) and back on I-40/I-81 for a total of 5599 miles. When I put it on just before I left, it had 10/32" of tread. Got home and it has almost 4/32" of tread. We were fully loaded on a Harley Ultra and fought wind all the way west and some coming back (not to mention the rain, snow and hail). The police tire wears much better than the 402's and has more tread when new too.

Thanks for the response. I was trying to decide if I was going to replace my tire before or after going on the Butterfly Rally. Well I decided to replace the tire before the rally, but it turned out to be a lost cause. While in Globe Az. we were rear ended while stopped at a high school crosswalk. So now in addition to wasting a perfectly good tire I will also need a motorcycle to go with a slightly damaged sidecar. The wife and I are OK, but a our vacation went down the toilet. The rig is in the shop and the insurance company is still trying to decide how they will handle it.

Thanks. I didn't know the model but was aware of Dunlop Bead-Lock tires for special Police model rims only. I didn't realize they had different tread too.

Lloydrs, How well does that tire handle? Did you have to special order it from someone? My Drag Spec. dealer has no part # for it.

I am installing the raked tree from Liberty on my Ultra. Hoping for alot better cornering.

Thanks,
Scrubs

Scrubs,
The tire handles very well. I didn't notice any difference between it and the regular tires from Dunlop. The only place I've been able to find them is at a Harley Dealer. If your local dealer services any police bikes, then they should have the tire. I also found that it's cheaper than the regular tire (paid $121.50) plus mounting. By the way, I have it mounted on a standard rim too. The techs grumble a bit when they have to mount one because it's harder to put on.
Regards,
