Oldest known sidecar
Hi,
I was looking through my collection of sidecar pictures for a photo of s WD Norton for another post on this website when I came across the attached. The sidecar is (unless you know of an older one) the oldest known sidecar.
It was made in 1903, by a company called Grahom Brothers, and they sold it as the "Liberty Social Attachment" ("Social attachment" a good way to describe a sidecar).
The bike it's hitched to is a 1907 Vindec, the bloke sitting on the bike is the owner and the scruff in the natty waistcoat sitting in the sidecar is yours truly. I'd just been given a ride round the field and have to say it was quite comfortable.
Whether I'd feel comfortable going down a steep hill in the rain with nothing but a rim brake to slow the plot down is another matter.

Hopefully there are three pictures attached. If not they'll be along shortly
That is cool!! Thank you for posting the pics!!

In fact in 1988 in the German Oldtimer Markt, there was an add for the sale of a British bike with a willow sidecar from 1903. There must be still older ones out in the barns and museums.
Sidecars must have been mounted to motorcycles since at least 1898 in France as I can recall another article from the Oldtimer Markt.

Those tiller type handlebars look scary.
This one's not as old but it is attached to a Harley.
Really great to see this old rigs. Hope we see more of them.

Might it be that for the first one somebody recycled his wheel chair?.
Look for the rear handles.
Or somebody was already thinking in skate boarders...
Back to the future.
Wicker chairs were common on hacks back then because of light weight.

No Jim, because of the easy way to empty the chair...
Break hard, take off for a free flight...
and... the next passenger can enter right away.

Unless you over compensate and then this could have happened.
At that time in history they still hadn't figured out to lead the sidecar wheel.
They hadn't got around to fitting working brakes either, braking hard was using both feet.
