New (used Hack for me !!! )
Hey guys,
I just brought home a 1999 Harley hack for my 2003 Ultra. I'm pretty pumped about this new style of riding and my wife can't wait !!! She's the 1 that wanted a hack and I've never been one to turn down a toy when the wife says "buy it". I still have a Night Rod for solo riding.
Let me just ask, is there ANYONE near Smithfield, NC that would be willing to let me see their rig so I can get started on getting this baby mounted? Anyone got a book to lend me or advice? Instruction manual?
HELP !!!
Peace !
Buy the Harley Sidecar Manual.
It will tell you all the hoops you have to jump through to get the older sidecar on your 100th Anniversary rig.
FYI: There are many.

I'm going to the Harley shop now to see if they stock it, if not, I'll get it from Ebay .
Thanks

If you go the e-bay route look up either Zima lady or Bills bike barn, Bill has tons of manuals for sidecars and bikes
The one that you will want is Harley P/N 99485-03. They are on eBay brand new all of the time. I sure hope that you got all of the parts with the sidecar. Most people will remove the sidecar and mounts and leave other things on. There are numerous other little issues.
With your 2003 HD for example, you will have to modify the brake system to fit the sidecar. Also, you will probbly be needing a different rear mount (2 bolts versus 3). The book will show you all of this.
Be prepared for some reading and don't bother asking the Harley dealer. It's not that they don't care, they just simply don't know. But I mean that in a nice way........................... 🙂
This 1999 hack came off a 2001 Ultra, so I was hoping it would bolt right onto my 2003. I wasn't aware of any changes between the 2 years??? He swears all the mounting hardware is there, and I can't see what could possibly be missing, but who knows.
I just ordered/bought a manual on Ebay for $30.00 shipped and it's NOT that part #, it's # 99485-06. The cover plainly reads 1999-2006. I got to ask why this isn't the right book? If this turns into a headache, I'll just sell the hack and stay on 2 wheels.
Thanks for the help tho', it's appreciated !!!
Above is a link to the sale page. Scroll down to see the book.

It's possible that the one you purchased will work. It will have information on changes made in 2004, 5 and 6 also.
The part number for that rear mount is shown as 87114-93A in my 2004 parts manual. In 1993, the FL frame used three bolts to hold the rear mount (87114-93) to the frame. The -93A is different in that it has only two bolts holding it to the frame. In addition the space for the rear Heim joint is approximately 1" wider to accomodate a spacer. The extra space makes it easier to R&R the sidecar. Also, instead of using a bolt and a nut, the rear 3/4" bolt merely threads into the mount.
I believe that this change from 87114-93 to 87114-93A (2 bolts instead of 3) was made in order to match the new frame in 2002 - (P/N 47900-02A) which had a redesigned rear swing arm mount to accomodate the new 2002 swing arm ( Rear Fork P/N 47549-02) for the 1" (instead of 3/4") axle.
Sooooo...................that's what I rather suspect that you may need a new rear mount. Your 2003 frame is the same as my 2004 frame but the 1999 3 bolt mount is different from the 2002 on up rear mount. For the record, they have changed the mount a couple more times since then because they keep changing the frame. So much for interchangeability in Harley Parts.
Another interesting issue is that your 2003 originally has the "lay down" late brake pedal, P/N 42407-02. Strangely, there are two pictures in the Harley parts book showing two different "Foot Brake Pedals", one is the 2002 and later (late) one and the other one is up to 2001, (what I call early) even though they show the same part number for it. The early number is listed in the book that you ordered as part of the connection kit.
Why would they have two different brake pedals, you ask? Well, the late one hits the sidecar frame loop where it connects to the lower front mount. Therefore, it's necessary to change to the early one.
Also, either of the two brake pedals hit the original low master cylinder so part of the change is a different (remote, FXR-style) master cylinder cover and a remote master cylinder reservoir which fits onto the frame below the upper front mount.
Also, the clutch cable needs to be changed for one that is about 6" longer so that it can go under the crankcase to miss the front mount.
Then, there's the elbow to move the oil pressure sending unit and the mount for the steering damper that replaces the original air dam on the lower triple tree.
There's also a roll over switch that is used on 2002 and later FL's with sidecars to change from a 45 degree bank angle sensor to a 180 degree (upside down) shutoff if you should have a wreck. Many folks who add earler sidecars run without this since they don't come with the earlier sidecars and Harley wants a half hour labor to rerprogram your TSSM to sidecar.
Changes were also made in 2002 to incorporate two new standoffs. They incorporate a turnbuckle action into the lower front and rear frame mounts to permit changes in toe-in without removing the 3/4" bolts securing the Heim joints to the frame mounts. These won't be with you 1999 frame nor will they fit since the frame was changed in 2002. It's not necessary to have them. It just makes adjustments easier.
Your 2006 book will explain all of these changes. And now you know why I have so few friends. LOL.
Good luck.
🙂
Well, thanks for the info....anyone want to buy a 1999 Harley Hack ?

I didn't mean to discourage you. You can easily locate a rear mount if needed and the sidecar will work with those minor changes around the brake area. You can mix and match. It doesn't have to be "anatomically correct" as long as it's safe.
A spread of 4 years is not uncommon when retrofitting to an earlier hack. The book you are getting shows exactly what is needed to connect a 1999 TLE to a 2003 FL.
Don't squeal until you'e stuck. LOL.
Good luck. Keep us posted. We can talk you through it 🙂
Thanks, maybe I'll give it a shot. I'll keep this posted .
Is there any place that might sell this part #87114-93A used? It's almost $200.00 new ,,,ouch !
Thanks.

I checked on Zanotti Motors in Pennsylvania for their price. They show that number at $118.09. You could buy one and then sell the one that comes with your sidecar on eBay and probably come out even. I don't know whether they have it in stock but they can get you one in less than a week.
Before you do that, you really should verify that you need that particular part number. I say that because I haven't seen your old sidecar or mount and don't know whether it may have been used on a late bike before. If I saw the mount I could tell. I am assuming that you have a 2002 and later original frame also with a large rear fork, 1" axle, 2 bolt mount requirement and so on.
That's the part number that came with my 2007 sidecar and fits perfectly on my 2004 Ultra so I presume that's what you need.
When you get the sidecar could you post pictures of the frame where the mount goes and the rear mount that came with the sidecar?
Don't give up.
Here is the Zanotti link. Just type that number in and that will show you the price. You can call them and order it. They are my favorite supplier since the local HD dealer went out of business.

Thanks a bunch for the heads up. I have the car here and will shoot you some pics of what I have, some time in the morning. I see where I need a 2 bolt mount and a 3 bolt came with the car. It is a 1999 car, was mounted to a 2001 Ultra, and is going on my 2003. If it's just a matter of buying the mount for the price you found me, I'll do it, but if I have to buy/install a clutch cable, move the brake pedal, and such, I'll just pass.
I'll shoot pics in the morning. Should I post them here or would they look better if I send them straight to your e-mail addy?
Thanks again, you're a BUNCH of help !!!!!!!

You will definitely have to get the early brake pedal but they are readily available since they go all the way back to the first rubber-mounted FL's in the early 1980's.
You could probably get by if you route the clurch cable properly to miss the hardware.
You will definitely have to change the brake master cylinder and get a remote reservoir.
That stuff isn't all that expensive. Whenever I make a purchase like a sidecar, I won't quit until I get it working. I'm on my third one and I have been around them all of my life. You just have to get into the spirit of the thing.
I don't know what you paid for the sidecar or whether you've bought it yet. Nonetheless, things always come up and you need to deal with them.
I hope you hang in there. Lots of help is available here. When you get the book, you will see what I'm talking about in re the brake.
Send me a private message with your email and I'll request the photos that way when I give you my email.
Regards.
LOTS of folks buy a used sidecar without getting all the bits and pieces... - unless you can get the guy to cough up the parts you will need to take a inventory and get whats missing.. there is a complete parts list of whats in a 2003 mounting kit in the manual and a list of what parts you need to change from a 2001 kit if you have the whole kit.
the most expensive parts are the ones you CANT see - the ones that are easy to get off and send with the sidecar are the cheap ones - that 200 $ bracket is a cheap part - you should be able to get it for 120 if you dig. i got the latch on ebay for a hundred, got the roll over for 110.. purchased a 2007 mount kit that didnt have those two parts for 975, plus the special right side fairing lower for 200. oh, and a tree that is very nice but not required unless, like me, you get sore wrists for 1k
the mounting kit - all told - is about 1200 bux now. [plus a few parts that wont be in the kit....] - its a 40 lb box of totally special one off parts that convert a bike from a solo bike to a sidecar capable bike... and the whole kit just disappears into the bike. its completely invisible & only somebody who has installed the kit will really be able to look at a bike and tell if it has the kit on it or not - its very subtle and well enginered to be invisible. many many owners take the sidecar off and sell it not even aware that 1200 bux of parts for that sidecar are still on there bike.
ive done two installs and one removal - takes me about a day and a half each way - and i have all the tools.
that all said - its not that bad - fairly straight forward - follow the service manual the sidecar service manual to the t and its all good.
but to be completely honest with you. you jack up the bike, remove the exhaust system, remove the right foot board and brackets, remove the rear brake pedal & master cyl, remove the transmission cover, cable, levers, remove the seat, battery etc. remove the saddle bags, remove the fairing, remove the voltage regulator.
then - install the new latch that comes in the kit in the right saddlebag
then - install the brake kit - takes me a hour with it off the bike to get it done - stubborn O rings.
then - move the oil sender
then - install the brake tee for the sidecar brake
then - install the roll over switch etc and put the batt back in [and take to the dealer to get activated - takes 10 mins]
then - install the new clutch cable and all its fixings, the cover and adjust the clutch and put the fairing back on.
then - install the rear mount
then - install the rear master cyl and pedal
then - install the new voltage regulator bolts - its IMPOSSIBLE to remove the regulator for service if the bolts are not changed to sidecar bolts BEFORE you install the lower mount...
then - install the lower mount and adjust it
then - install the upper mount
then - install the upper steering damper mount
then - install the foot board
then - install the exhaust sys and all the gaskets etc
if you want it to steer real nice - stop here and change out the front tree for a trike raked tree, liberty, HD trike, champion etc etc pick one. well worth the money if you are not very strong
then - install the sidecar
then - bleed the brakes
then - plug in all the wires
then - adjust toe in & lean out
then - install the seat & bags etc & go do a test ride
then - tweak till toe in and lean out till the result is nice easy centered steering.
later
