New Guy With Questions
I have looked at both the 650 and the 1000 V Strom at the dealer. The mounts will not be the same. The 1000 has two extra bolts up high on the engine to the frame which will be used on our mount set up.

Claude, I found a couple pics of ski outriggers. There isn’t much out there. What I did find that was pretty cool is a sidecar that turns into a boat.

Bob/Ernie, I think you are getting it through my head that I need to do this right and quit trying to cut corners. Sometimes I can be a little thick. You are correct, I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on something that is going to be a pain in butt. Maybe I am getting this take it off and on thing from those Voyager trike kits. I looked into them but don’t think it will work for my purposes. I have been lurking over at Adventure Riders. It’s a pretty good site. There are some folks over there riding around in the snow with knobby tires and studs on 2 wheels……….hmmmmmmmm……..something else to think about.;-)
Jay, Since the frames are different, do you think it will be possible to bolt a side car on a 650???
Stacy, I will keep your offer in mind. The more info I get….the less I seem to know what I am going to do.;-)
Wheeldog,
"Well the more that I learn, the less that I know" I think that may have been a line from a STYX song once a few years ago ...
I'll bet that most here empathize with you because they had similar steps when obtaining their first rig. I know I did! I thought of a few things that I hadn't seen mentioned yet. 1-You have some time to think and act if you are not doing the ride for a year. I understand your desire to test your rig in the cold, in fact I think it is a real good idea, but not so important that I would rush to get a "good deal" from a dealer on a new bike. Seems to me that another "good deal" will come along the next time the sales department feels that they haven't sold enough product lately. 2-You label yourself as a New Guy. Is there any sidecar operator training offered in your area? If not, perhaps you would consider a flight to Seattle, Wa. for training. They have an excellent program there. When I took the course we were permitted to swap off and try the different rigs that were available so you could get a little variety while you learned. Also, a Seattle visit puts you near to both Jay and Lonnie as well as just about any brand MC dealer you can think of - might be a good way to accomplish a lot of research in a relatively short amount of time. 3-As you are discovering, "inexpensive" and "sidecar" don't seem to get together very often, especially if you add "new" and "quality" to the mix! I say let your wallet fear not though, once you introduce a rig to your stable, you likely will want to keep it there. I enjoy both 2 and 3 wheels at different times and for different reasons. I wouldn't want to give up either! 4-Finally, seems to me that not too long ago there was a thread going here about winter/snow riding. Should make for some interesting reading given the type of trip you are planning.
Hope this helps,
Steve
Steve,
I am sure the people who know sidecars gotta be getting frustrated with me too. LOL I haul dirt for a living and deal mostly with home owners who are trying to save a few bucks and do work themselves. Just like with sidecars, you need to do things right or it is gonna cause you problems. Some people listen and do ok. Others do things their own way……we call them “repeat customers” cause I know they are gonna be calling me for years to come re-doing their mistakes. I would like to get this sidecar thing right the first time. I came here so I wouldn’t have to re-invent the wheel……but wanna save some bucks too.

Actually, I have some feelers out. Got a call today. There is a ’01 KLR with low mileage pretty cheap…..I will check it out.
Guess I need to give up on the Wee Strom. I don’t think it is possible to put a sidecar on one due to their lack of frame.

I never even heard of such a thing. Thanks!!! I will ask around and see if anything is offered up here. If not I will see if I can catch something is WA.
<>
No kidding!!!! I am figuring the rig is gonna be pretty much trashed after the trip. That is my reason for going “cheap”. I am going to do a bunch a mods to the bike to keep the wind off, that will basically turn the rig into a “rat bike”. It will be functional and (hopefully) mechanically dependable…..but ain’t gonna be pretty.
<>
I will do a search and see if I can find it. Thanks for your help!!!
UPDATE.........
I went ahead and bought a '99 KLR. The bike has 6,300 miles on it with a few mods, skid plate, exaust, tall windshield, doo-hickey. The bike had it's 6,000 mile service last Aug and should be dependable.
My next step is save my pennies and get a sidecar for it.

Great start! Now check out a Ural utility sidecar for it. It would be ideal for your purpose.
That Utility looks pretty cool.....I was thinking Platform, but could prolly haul more in the Utility.

If you put a utility hack on the KLR, give me a shout after you trash it. I may be interested in the leftovers. :0) I have a grandson who's approaching riding age and already talking sidecar. I have the Valkyrie/Ural, his mother runs a Silverwing/California, and he'd look good on a KLR/Ural as a starter outfit.
We are the importer for the USA of Ural sidecars. At this time we only have one cargo sidecar in stock and will not have more for at least 3 months.
We are sold out of platform sidecars but are making our own and should have them mid march.
We have lots of Ural passenger sidecars in stock.
