I have been running block K's on the rear of my '73 R75 rig for the
last 4 years. now I have gotten a replacement rear cast Lester wheel, and need to get an 18 X 4.00 tubless tire for it. any reccomendations?
the wheel came with an almost new Metzler Perfect ME 99A1 tire.120/90.
but it seems to be too wide. It is 1/2 " wider than my Block K tire,
and that was a very close fit.
I havnt tried to get it in yet. the original spoke wheel w/block K, I
have to leave out the air to get the wheel out and back in.I think the
new tire will rub on my fender.
Block K doesnt make a tubeless tire.

I've been running a Metzeler block-K 4.00 x 18 tire without a tube on the front of my wife's GL650 rig without any problems.

thats good news to hear! a couple others said the heard of them being used tubeless also. one mentioned that a few pounds of air was needed to be added about once a week. any comment on that? not normal? leaky rim?

I purchased the GL650 last winter and picked it up in the spring. The original owner put the front end from a Honda Magna on the GL650 because the leading axle on the forks moved the front wheel forward, for easier steering. He also used the 18" Magna front wheel with the Metzeler block-K sidecar tire. I have not added any air this summer.

AVON MKII IS MY TIRE OF CHOICE (BMW R100). CHECK YOUR LESTER MAGS, THE EARLY LESTER WHEELS WERE NOT TUBELESS APPROVED. THE RIM WILL DE MARKED "SUITABLE FOR TUBELESS TIRE" IF IT IS.

I have the Avon MKII 19" on the front of my bike.they dont make an 18" for the rear.
yesterday I installed the Lester drum wheel on the rear of my R75. It came mounted with a tubeless 120/90 Metztler ME99 solo bike tire on it.

I will use this tire until I need to replace it next year...it came on the wheel, so....Freee!!
The 120/90 rear tire is a close fit but clears the driveshaft fine. it uses a thicker top hat spacer on the right side to give more room at the driveshaft area. I have 1/2" clearance there...no problems. this was installed already by the shop, and the whole wheel assembly came off a Beemer /6.
the bearing innards on the Lester have also been replaced with the BMW bearing stack.
so, I;m set ...for awhile!

I want to avoid using a tube, to get rid of the hassle of removing wheel, tire and tube, replacing tube, and replacing the wheel on the highway.
I got ahold of a Lester cast wheel with new bearings, great spline gear, and an almost new Metz 120/90 tubeless tire.for $200. I put that on my bike for now, and will see how the solo tire wears, next summer. season is almost over here ..snow will be blowing in soon.

You mean to say that you park your rig in the winter!?!?!?

That is when mine gets the most use!!! 😀

I run an Avon Gripster rear tire for great traction in the cold and on slushy/snowy conditions. Have traditionally stuck with the venerable old Metzler Lazer on the front and a block profile on the sidecar tire. I am due for a new front for this winter, so I am thinking about experimenting with something with a little softer compound and maybe more aggressive tread pattern for winter.

Anyone have any suggestions?

yup, I'll be packing the rig away in a few weeks.
I hate cold weather!!

Karl,
I'm a little selective about the conditions I choose to ride in the winter. I won't ride much below 20 degrees F. or in deep snow or glare ice.
For the front tire I just mounted a Bridgestone Trailwing 39 rear tire. It's a fairly aggressive dual sport tire. The jury's still out on this tire as I only have a few miles on it and it hasn't snowed yet.
I've been running Duro Medians on the rear of my Honda GL650/Dneper. They are one of the few dual sport tires that fit a 16 inch rim. I don't get much more than 2000 or 3000 miles out of them, but they are good on the dirt roads I ride and don't squirm around at 80 mph on pavement. I can get them delivered for $53.00
The tread lugs are deep enough to drill and install carbide studs. The local Les Schwab tire store doesn't "do motorcycles", but one of the managers loaned me the stun gun so that I could "do it myself".
Studs make a big difference. I highly recomend them with the understanding that winter driving may be hazardous to your health.

Mark,
I have run close pattern trials tires in winter and they did pretty good. Thye seem to be hard to find now though. I have to admit that they do squirm a lot and it takes some getting used to.
As far as the studs go i have heard many say that when you do the rear it is also a good idea to do the front to be abel to get half decent steering etc.
From my experience going up a steep hill can be the main hassle with steering especially if there is a tight left turn that needs to be made.
What is your esperience with this ?
