Hello all, I just bought a Harley sidecar for my 1983 FLH and am learning to ride all over again. I've owned my FL since new so thats a lot of riding without a hack. It was painted yellow so hence the name my friends gave it......I'm looking into installing brakes on it (it came with none) if I can find a source..It has a drum with nothing in it right now.
I've been reading this forum and have found some good info.....I tryed to put up a pic but it wouldnt go...........

Second opening: repair text and "Add/remove attachments" => "submit"
Here we are with a foto or screen print or what ever.
In this case a grafic of the regulation result of a incubator I modified a year ago as example, because I have no bike photos on my childrens computer.

I just bought a set of brake shoes for my 96 sidecar. I got them from J&P cycle, part no. 41801-58A. I think yours should be the same part.

you didnt want to paint the bike to match the car? Not many riders get to be a Yellow Submarine. Many are called, few respond!

is the drum empty? or is the backing plate entirely missing? brake lines gone? does it still have its wiring harness for the brake/running light and the turn signal?

i have a disk brake sidecar, im way happy with it but i missed out on a drum brake sidecar just before i got the one i have. disk brake ones are easier to aline - but the drum brakes are more retro and work just fine

It has the back plate, drum and wheel cylinder. Just needs the shoes and springs I think.............I'm not sure what shape the the wheel cylinder is in, it most likely will need to be rebuilt or replaced...I'd love to have a disc brake, they work a lot better as well................

looks like a custom wheel of some sort......

the brake cyls are avail, so are rebuild kits - basically its a standard harley juice brake setup...

part numbers are late 50's to early 60's and were still being installed new right till they went to disk brakes. and ill be a buc that the drum brake parts will be available longer than the disk brake parts will be since there are at least 50 drum brakes for every disk brake built [harley sidecar disk brakes are unique to sidecars - the drum brakes are the same front back and side.

also on that vintage bike you can get a adjustable tree that has a bolt you change position of for sidecar steering or bike steering. they also made a headlight adjuster ring that bolts right on. both work real slick and the raked tree makes them handle very very well. best of all its all stock.

if the bike is a 4 speed there is a cast in space for reverse in the trans case - but the internals for reverse are VERY VERY hard to find.

Thats good info guys, thanks for the help........I think I'm going to get a new wheel cyl. if thats the case, I'd rather go new then rebuilt anyway. Im going to keep looking for a front 16 spoke mag for it and make it fit one way or the other......

Not all 4 speed cases are machined for a reverse gear more so on the newer ones. When dealing with Harley part numbers 41801-58A the -58 is the first year it was used. The A means there was one change which could mean nothing more then a change in supplier or a psychical change. If it has B means second and so on.

Drum brakes work as well as the disc and in some ways better as they do not noise like my disc does. You do not want the sidecar brake to work to good or you will make a right turn when applied. This is why the disc is so small.

What year is your bike and what brake fluid are you running. Mixing brake fluid is not good.

I wish I could afford to get my HD sidecar painted the color of my bike.

check sputheenginnering.com they make harley trannys with reverse , spendy buggers tho. little over 5,000 bucks. I talked to the owner one day, about putting one on my 72 harley, I wanted a 5 speed with reverse, he makes them, when I talked to him he didnt have any at the time, but was about to start making them again, he says he ownly makes around 50 a year, there built in shop and was designed by this guy. all parts are made in house. how ofen do you hear that.

I've been looking for a reverse system and your right, its too much money. Even the old electric motor on the sidecar wheel sounds pretty shakey. I can live without reverse........As far as painting the Hack? It cost me 2K to get it painted, mind you he did a really nice job on it but still, I thought 2K was a lot........
I use DOT5 brake fluid like my manual describes so I wont be mixing fluids.....
After the new year I'm going to order everything I need to complete my drum brake, the nice part about drum brakes is the adjuster, if its biting too much its easy to back it off a bit...........
Oh, the bike is a 1983 FLH Electra Glide......

the tranny is actually a 5 speed in a 4 speed box they want 2295 for it and the reverse is another 1200, so they must of came down in price since I last looked at their site. Ive also gota 72 flh electra glide completely restored, Its all chrome from the factory tank, both fenders and has original fiberglass saddle bags and the trunk. at a cost of $24,000 invested. I did most of the work, you wouldnt think you could get that much money into something as small as a bike is, compared to a car. took 3 month to build the motor, and that keeping it stock, then the tranny 1300 but I changed the gearing for better highway driving, the stock gearing you could plow a field with it,its so high geared.

Id still take alook at their site, they have many other parts for harleys, motors and the works. rebuild kits, big bore kits. sputheengineering.com they are in central california.
outside of sacramento.

ok, if ya need any more info let me know.

Id keep what ever braking you have on your rig, better to keep it original. if it give you problems at higher speeds in braking, means its not designed for the speed, just have to ride slower. besides you want to go slower so everyone can see what you got. and say ooooo I want one...LOL
