Last Chance to Register to become a S/TEP Instructor at the Rally
OK Gang, it’s down to the wire for signing up for the STEP IP course at the rally in Duluth. We have a range, we have a chief instructor and now we need to fill out the class. If you want to be in this class you need to apply NOW!
In order to take the class you must…
To qualify for enrollment in an Instructor Prep course:
potential candidates must complete the application form [a copy is attached to this email]. the application must also include:
1. A copy of their recent driving record, from their state's Department of Motor Vehicles.
a. A recent "driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) conviction on a driver's license disqualifies the candidate. ESC recommends a 3-year "wait" time following conviction, or as established by state statute or program.
b. Recent multiple moving violations or an old DUI conviction could be cause for concern and should be evaluated prior to accepting the individual as an Instructor Candidate.
2. Proof of a valid motorcycle operator license or endorsement.
3. Send a deposit check ( made out to the USCA ) in the amount of Three hundred dollars $300.00 to:
USCA c/o Dave Szkudlarek
4059 Shadows Glade
Trotwood, OH 45426
The balance of the fee will be due prior to the start of class. In the event that the class doesn’t make, we will refund in full. If the class goes but you don’t show, there is no refund. [‘Sorry, but we are doing this without a net, if even one candidate falls out we lose money]
4. Scan the completed application [a copy is attached to this email] and your driving record and send via email to:
Dave Wendell
It is strongly recommended that Candidates complete the S/TEP Basic Course prior to enrolling in the IP but it is not a requirement.
The ESC S/TEP Instructor Candidate (IC) qualifications are:
1. ICs must be a licensed motorcyclist who currently rides.
2. ICs should have several years of varied riding experience.
3. ICs need good communication skills.
4. A sincere desire to help reduce motorcycle accidents, injuries, and deaths is the prime motivator of Instructors."
To qualify for certification, ICs must:
Pass the S/TEP Course Skills Test, by obtaining a passing grade of 85% or better. (Missing no more than 15 penalty points.) (ICs have two opportunities to pass the skills test.)
Pass the written knowledge test by obtaining a passing grade of 80% or better. The test is comprised of questions addressing all aspects of the Instructor Preparation Course and teaching the S/TEP course.
Achieving a SATISFACTORY Grade from the Chief Instructor during one classroom lesson presentation, one range exercise as the Lead Instructor and one range exercise as the Assistant Instructor.
Remember, you will need to be in Duluth and ready for class starting Friday June 6th at 8:00AM. The campground will be open if you want to camp. Our group reservation doesn’t cover this so you’re on your own to deal with the campground but there will be space available. If you want to stay at a motel, take a look at the lodging choices I’ve written about at http://www.sidecar.com/rally2.asp . The range and classroom are in Superior, WI, about 13miles from the campground. It only takes a few minutes for the trip but you may want to consider staying in Superior.
If you have any questions, please send me an email or call at 612/759-4666. Any questions specifically about entrance to the IP or qualifying as a candidate should be directed to Dave Wendell. Do not contact Evergreen as they will just refer you to Dave.
I cannot emphasize this enough, this is the LAST OPPORTUNITY you will have to sign up. If you’re on the fence, this is a bad week to send the check, or any other special circumstance or questions, call me and let’s talk.
