Hmmm. Should I re-think lead as ballast?

Posted by: @calvin-watsonDid any of your sidecar frames have this label on it?

Yes, Cal-Vin, Caretaker of Sidecar Willie, the one sidecar I sold within one week of owning it....that aforementioned Triumph Rocket lll had the same sidecar as you have, and it was far too light/small a sidecar to have attached to the Godzilla of motorcycles...a Triumph Rocket lll.
AND....the very first "instruction" on that sidecar frame label is..." Observe all Speed Laws ! ".
That is just plain crazy. I am not about to start observing speed laws, just because I attached a sidecar to my motorcycle.
Speed laws are designed for Ural sidecar rig owners, that cannot get UP to the posted speed limit in the first place.

@miles-ladue ok it was still the 1st. Mr I'm more sensible.
Might change my avatar thingie to say.
Rides on the left but sometimes right.
If I can work it out.
There's a question on the Aussie Facebook sidecar site at the moment about sidecar weights.
How much as a percentage of the bike should a sidecar weigh?
Of course a dynamically well balanced rig is about more than weight alone.
My 1st effort was too narrow. So I could lift the empty chair by standing on the outside footpeg.
(That's on the right and sometimes left)
A bike like the Weestrom I had, can have a high centre of gravity.
Thus making for a lofty rig.
Boxer motors do have an advantage there.
Also low slung cruisers.
Though they do tend to be weighty and throw it around a fair bit.
Unless the not wife rides pillion then steps may need to be taken in the way of balast.
Miles we must ask you not to do the calculations on the total of the content of the sidecar times 3.1416 for example to get the weight of his pillion.
No I am not going there. I said not... get behind me...
Much earlier outfits had sidecars weighing 45 or so percent of the bike.
Talking British rigs from the Empires more glorious age.
And maybe a certain BMW copy.
From time to time we see cosy's on Hogs.
Not good.
My current transport that people want to talk about in the carpark.
That's the 3 wheeled one.
Seems fine in left hand turns ( that sometime right to some )
Spirited piloting has seen elevation though.
Not with the monkey intalled as industrial deafness means I no longer have enough hearing left to risk it.
That a 200kg bike.
Chair? 100+ something kg.
Maybe a little more than the pilot.
Oh the variables.
Tools though is a sensible suggestion.

That made my head hurt.
Bike 950 lbs curb weight sidecar 350 lbs leaving drive way with no gear. (This is currently transforming into a Trike)
When wife gets on bike we transfer baggage to sidecar.
Other one
Bike 476 lbs sidecar 150-170 lbs..
No extra weight added to either

@smitty901 it made your head hurt?
Of course it did,
It's what happens when you discuss weights and ballast in the same sentence with the wife.

Like explaining why another 10 pounds of luggage madders. Or why one more thing will not fit.
