HD SPRINGER WITH A SIDECAR
HELLO, CAN ANY ONE TELL ME IF A HD SPRINGER WORKS WELL WITH A HD SIDECAR ?
Don't see why it would not.I had one on my HD. You may need to change the lower rocker to adjust the trail. You did not say if it was a old or new fork

Joe,
The springer may be ok but if it is mounted on the mono shock frame,I could be wrong but don't see how it would mount up.
The HD cars are all mated to the touring models that have the dual rear shocks mounted to a swing arm and are attached to a different type frame than what the springer is mounted to.
if will definitely work with that nice electra glide in your avatar
Dont limit yourself to a HD sidecar. there are a lot of others out there with more room better suspension, ETC. look around.
I saw a liberty on a springer. IMHO....you do not want a HD sidecar on a springer. Too big, and it would look horrible. Check out Liberty or Champion. I have a Champion Legend on my 92' Heritage (it's kind of an indian "boat nose" style) and I know it will fit. The Legend is engineered different, but I have seen one on a red and white springer.
Good luck!
The Softtails use a different frame than the FLH's and FLT's. Harley used to make mounts for the FXR's but they were all swing-arm frames.
I put a springer front end on my '87 FXLR. The Harley experts said it couldn't be aligned correctly due to the difference in front wheel offset between the two models, but it worked fine for 9 years that way for me and is still going strong for the present owner.
Apparently they hadn't heard of relacing a 21" spoked wheel.
Check with Pete at Liberty Motors if you want a Retro Harley looking car.

I just recently got a Motorvation Spyder installed on my Heritage Springer, Ilove it, not alot of room inside, but I don't ride passengers very often, handles good at 75-80 mph, good luck!!
Any of the sidecars mentioned woudl work well for you and look good also. I think Stacy Goff up in new england still has a CHAMPION LEGEND for sale ..his email is: hoSERSBG@aol.com . He is also a good installed for a little huy..lol.
The Liberty sidecars are for a sure a great option too. Pete Larson produces a real gem in his classic sidecar!
We are a rep for Motorvation in Central Pa. if the Spyder is appealing to you. cstanley@sunlink.net
There is also the Ural sidecars that do look decent on a Harley. Dunno about off the shelf mounts for them but it can be done no doubt. Maybe check with Dauntless Motors.
Any of the above would be a decent matchup weight wise. In reality just about any sidecar can be mounted to any bike and will perform okay if the weight to weight ratio is within reason and if the suspensions are compatible.
We have done a lot of various hookups from scratch, some simple and some not so simple.
Have fun 🙂
HD used to recommend against mounting a sidecar on a springer because they doubted the spherical bearings on the springer pivots could stand the side-loads for very long.
I believe Harley was one of the pioneers in Springer mounted sidears.
Now they don't recommend putting sidecars on any model they do not produce a sidecar for.
The same holds true for most cycle mfg'rs. On many it will void the warranty.

We have done a few with good results. We have a jig for modifying the rockers on the springer to reduce trail as after all a springer is really a type of leading link front end.
The last one we did was a lowered Ural.

I have a '97 Heritage springer with a sidecar.I have a damper attached to the forks . It was made by Motorvation Engineering in Sibley Iowa. I love it and so does my wife and dog.

Good advice. In the first place, HD does not make a sidecar or mounts for their Softails. They also specifically recommend against running a Softail with a sidecar.
With all due respect to the MOCO, there's no reason why it can't be done, however. Liberty makes a very nice unit for Softail service. I've seen many of them in the Sacramento, California area and they are quite nice.
To my knowledge, the only recent bikes for which HD has built sidecar mounts are the FXR (RLE sidecar mounts) and the FL (TLE mounts).
I'm sure that other manufacturers besides Liberty make mounts for the Softail also. You'd have to look around a bit.
You would not be able to change rake and trail for sidecar use with the springer front end, however since the fork lacks removeable triple trees. Your best bet would be to get a dampener and a slightly flatter, longer set of bars.
When I had an HD sidecar on my 1993 FLHS, I ran the stock Harley dampener and used a set of Harley "Pullback Dresser" bars. It handled quite well except for crowned roads. To cure that, you'd need some sort of electric lean device but to my knowledge, those don't seem to be available for HD rigs.
Good luck. gnm109
If you want to change the trail on a springer it is a easy thing to do. Just change the bottem rockers on the fork and move the axel forwand I have done this many times with good resultsRon in Co
