Handling Adjustments ?
Progress?
Here is what we did try over a 120 miles ABATE Poker Run this weekend.
Tried different tire pressures and these seemed to help, the tire air pressure up to 38 psi rear tire, 32 side car tire, 27 psi front tire.
Also moved my body position more forward onto the fuel tank.
I will try the rear tire shock adjustment tomorrow night, as I didn't want to create a "Stir" during the run pulling the wrench bag out, jacking up the rear of the bike , and wrenching on things.......
You know what would be happening next, crowd control !!!!! There was too many asking if I had a slow leak as I had the compressor out 3 times, already.
Sounds good, Capt, and wise of you to go slow, step by step, one thing at a time.
Otherwise we end up like the unwise folks that post of their hopeless chaos after changing 4 or 5 things at once, "Now what's wrong???!" and for sure, nobody has an answer except the hard way!
No doubt you'll get it all sorted out over time, and also no doubt, it's worth the wait.
New Trials !!
1st, Gave a Girl (Rebecca) a ride on the "Bitch Seat" with 100# ballast in side car (Weight of Chick, est. 130#), no changes other than the previous tire psi changes. I had to UBER- Correct, in fact pull hard on the right handle bar while pushing like hell on the left bar to keep the rig straight and only going 35-40 mph as I thought the rig was unstable. Is this a NORMAL?!!!! Luckily, she wanted to try out the jump seat after only about 10 miles as she had never ridden in a side car before. (Thank God my arms were wearing out) We left the Salt Bag Ballast by a tree road side to be recovered later.
2nd, now back to the previous hobble, it was still there, so at a "Rehydration Stop", I turned the coil over spring adjuster to the "Max Weight" notch on the rear outboard, could not get the inboard one to go with the
RPOC stamp steel spanner wrench in tool kit as it kept hopping out of the "Adjuster Holes". Took a short ride with "Rebecca" in the jump seat.
MAJOR IMPROVEMENT even with only the 1 shock at the Max Weight setting.
Quick went back to my shop picking up our ballast enroute, using a channel lock pliers, turned up the other rear shock to Max Weight setting (Remember, I only have 2 choices).
Road All afternoon, PROBLEM SOLVED !!
Also, she LOVED THE JUMP SEAT !!! Never wanted to get back on the "Bitch Seat" the rest of the afternoon. (I think she loved all the Attention we were getting at "Rehydration Stops", even at stop signs)
SO I can't say if this adjustment had any effect on the 1st issue in this post. Anyway, she wants to go again next weekend. (I may never know?)
It might help if you posted a photo of Rebecca so we could evaluate your ballast.
Here is a pix of us.
Just to reference sizes,
I am 5' 7" @ 200 #
NOW, back to the hard steering of the 1st issue with a rider on the rear seat, EVEN with 100# of ballast in the side car?
I had plans to give family & friends rides with a passenger on the rear seat, kid(s) or dog(s) in the side car.
The way it handled is way out of the question now as a safety factor!!
P.S.
I know it isn't the best pix of Rebecca, I will get one when the weather is in the mid seventies, this weekend.
We were out in high 50-maybe 60 degree weather. (Also caught a brief shower, notice my shirt)
But she may be a "Keeper" !! Remember, after a ride on a cold, rained on day......She wants to go again this coming weekend!!!
Will have to Adjust her weight sans sweat shirt, vest & heavy coat, for further test runs, LOL
Two up on the bike and a light hack load is a formula for disaster.
2 weeks of partial road tests at the setting we have.
2000 Ural Patrol 650;
Tire PSI Rear 38, Sidecar 32, Front 27
Rear (of Bike Only) Shock Coil Over Springs set to position 2 (MAX WEIGHT)
Riding NICE!! No More "Hobble" (Corner to Corner Rocking)
Both with/without "Monkey" in sidecar.
I am now even riding without the 100# off softener salt in Hack.
YES, I feel the "Tar Strips" more, but the "Monkey" says the ride is nice !!
