turtleman57 - 8/9/2010 7:10 PM this horse has been beaten to death on various forums, even as we speak. I did a lot of research when I first got started and will with what I have found so far, I will run OEM Harley Dunlap's. Until I find that it is really safe and my insurance will cover it.

I can't speak for others, but when I applied for added value insurance with Progressive, I had to list the modifications, including the car tire. When the woman in the minivan pushed my Valkyrie sideways through the ditch and horse fence, Progressive paid for a new Bridgestone Potenza.

I've always taken that to mean they had no problem with it.

A short while ago there was a discussion on the Goldwing site in which a gent insisted that all insurance companies have issued statements against doing so. I had a chance to talk with my agent at a social gathering. She pointed out that she insures quite a few Boss Hoss, API, and other bikes that all come stock with a car tire. She represents a number of companies and said she has never had one refuse a claim for a car tire.

I've just fitted a federal feroza 175/60r/16 car tyre to the back of my 94 Goldwing rig. I love it. The ride has improved dramaticaly. Before I had an Excellsior 525/550/16. it was far too tall. If you didnt run it out in the gears the clutch basket would rattle and the engine laboured somthing chronic. Now it is back in the gear range it should be, maybe a little shorter, but that suits me. Dont know how many miles I'm going to get out of it but it has to be better than the 8000 klm that I used to get out of the Excellsiors.
Searched around everywhere for a tyre to fit. Finaly got intouch with Federal thru thier web site. Couldnt ask for better service. They shure helped me out.
And if it wasnt for the guys on this forum I would have given up ages ago.

Fill in the information and I'm sure they will contact you with info on where you can get a tyre. They did with me.

Hey UltraRodHack, I run the same Bridgestone Potenza G019 195/55-16 tire on the back and the Battle Ax BT-45 130/70/18 for the front wheel with my GL1800/Escort rig. Just for info, I use 36 PSI in the rear Potenza and 38-40 PSI in the front Battle Ax. I use 22 PSI in the sidecar tire. The tires are all wearing even across the thread with. Additional info I seldom carry a passenger on the bike, only my wife & puppy in the sidecar. I weigh 220 lbs and lets say my wife is well nourished too. Prior to the sidecar rig, I also used a car tire on the rear of a GL1800 with positive results. Also, with the other bike I used a run-flat tire, which has a stiffer sidewall. When the Potenza wears out I will probably go back to a run-flat.
