Dundertaker,
Do you carry a jack in the Heritage/Legend rig to get over cigarette packages and speed bumps without high centering on the front sidecar mount? LOL
It is quite close to the ground. Had the same problem with a RK/Spyder rig. Lots of ground clearance with the Motor Company "Banana" tho'.

The E-bay Dnepr mounting kit is an expensive joke unless you are going to put on a Dnepr (they already have mounts on them). No other bikes without sidecars will match the M72 clones frames or mounting positions.
The Dnepr is a good match for the FLs weightwise. Somewhat rough in fit and terrible in finish and upholstery, but can be detailed for an investment quite similar to the cost of a current model stock URAL. Weight is comparable, about 235#.
Some alterations will be in order to match the high 13"+ chassis long framed car to the low short frame of the Harleys and most other bikes.
At minimum a sub-frame (or fabricated bracketry) and adjustable mounting set would be in order for a skookum attachment.
I have mounted them to Harleys from '50 Panhead to '95 Evo with both types of mounts. Some purchased and some fabricated on the bikes.
I think I have a Pan/shovel '58/'83 and pre '95 Evo mount set hanging on the shop wall for URAL or Dnepr.

Just a thought, but if the M/C is primarily a de-stresser, why not keep the
FL the way it is, and get a URAL also. When I bought my first one, all my friends had to try it either as a rider or a passenger. If there were to be a single word the expess our collective thoughts re: the URAL, it would be
"giggles". I've been riding two wheelers for 49 years and unless I'm going for time/distance, the URAL rapidly became "weapon of choice" to attack stress or "the blahs". Now have an EV11 Guzzi and a Royal Star Venture w/Sauer Sonnenwind beiwagen (sidecar). Still miss the URAL and plan to add a
Patrol model in the near future...not as a replacement, but as another tool in the arsonal.

I can tell you from experience Lumpy, a stock 03' Road King is no match for a GL1800 w/a Hannigan GTL. My buddy was grinding his pegs off trying to keep up with me and he always had a good view of the HANNIGAN logo on the rear of the Rig from a dead stop.

A good HP sidecar can out run a stock HD cruiser most days, not that you need to, but knowing you can is half the fun! To answer you question Hack'n: I've only scraped the Legend once, but I'm not very aggressive with it. The point of my thread was the weight ratio has to be there. If the original poster want's to go with a "Baby Buggy" from HD, it will match the bike, unlike trying to jam a 130 lbs. Velorex on his bike 700+ lbs HD. FYI my wife got car sick sitting in the Stocker, or should I say "rocker", at the bike show, so we don't own one! I have always loved HD's look, but every 100 years of so they need to re-engineer stuff, whether it needs it or not! The wobble and wiggle of the leaf spring set up just doesn’t compete with a Coil over leading link.

I think you should remember that everyone has the "perfect rig" and all have rigs their short commings. I just hate to see someone waste money and start off on the wrong foot! Good riding all!

If you have a $5 head, buy a $5 helmet!!

Lump,
He's right, 68 or so HP with the RK V-twin (apple) vs god knows what in the 6 cyl. car motor that powers the GL1800 (orange), no contest.
I did OK against them with my Turbocharged RK with 120 HP (Tomato). But probably wouldn't have done so well agsinst the Duetto (Pomegranate).
Cruisers aren't about racing and racers aren't about cruising and trikes aren't sidecar rigs.

Dunder,
The Harley love/hate thing has been going on for over 100 years but they're still there, aren't they?
About a hundred years ago when (most) all bike were rigid framed people started mounting hacks to them, adding leaf springs to the sidecar bodies for passenger comfort. Harley, being the sole survivor of these days that is still around selling sidecars has had very good luck selling their choice of design. If it works, why fix it could apply here.
My bride of 46+ years, being a partner in a sidecar business, has ridden in hundreds of sidecars and her 3 favorites for comfortable riding are the newer 562 Velorex models, the URAL Classic and the Harley "Banana". Ease of entry and egress goes to the URAL Classic. Her opinion, not the worlds.
If someone else likes others that's fine with her. Not having spent much time as a sidecar passenger, I have no favorites except for aesthetics.

I feel the optimum outfit is one that is well matched bike to car. One that handles well with the driving style and loading needs of the owner and passengers. Last but not least, one that pleases the owners aesthetic tastes.

Ride on and far, smell the breeze and kiss the bugs,

Lonnie

Hack'n,

I agree, to each his own. The thread asked "what is your opinion on.....xyz". I gave mine. I LOVE my HD......I LOVE my Honda, but for different reasons. Buy what you think will fit your needs. Price is always an issue...but should not be the ONLY issue. Too many Newbee's get hung up on the cost!

Another sidecar to consider is our Kenna which is the least expensive sidecar made in North America at only $2495, We are also the USA importer for the Ural sidecar which is similar to the Dnepr but of a better fit and finish. The Urals we import have adjustable front lower mounts some thing the Dnepr does not. We have bike specific mounts for many different bikes and in the case of your Harley we have automotive tires that fit right on your stock wheels which last almost twice as long as a bike tire, We have triple tree's to lower steering effort and reverse that can be added to your bike.
Let me know if we can be of any help at all.

Dundertaker, it’s probably true enough about newbees getting hung up on cost, my 06 Ultra Classic with the screaming eagle motor/TLE ultra hack/ Liberty rake/all the bling bling, plus the HD dealers labor bill….yea I’m hung up for sure! But it’s also common knowledge that most of us HD riders are still dragging our knuckles, and shouldn’t concern ourselves with such things as, economic issues, or comfort, or reliability, or style, or power, or WHO built it!!

Duck….a newbee

Ya, that's true being and old school HD, fanatic, I know for sure I was never worried about the cost of maintenance, or the fact I had to work on it every where I went, the evo was much better but far from trouble free. Then when I realized all the parts in the house were made in Twain, and if you pulled all the Japanese made parts you were not going anywhere, and the fact that a Porsche/Honda engine pulled 'em outta the ditch, then the cost factor and the fact that they never made Metric cruisers back then, the glaze, left my eye and I bought a Royal Star. It felt right, it ran right and I put 10,000 miles on in a little over 30 days, and tried to break it, by that I mean I ran it harder than any HD I ever owned. I have owned 3 Shovels, two evos, and a Sportster, race bike which was the most trouble free, just change the plugs, oil and high 10's to low 11's every time. I could say more but I probably pissed off enough people already. Enjoy what you enjoy as long as you can, and justify it.

Lumpy, the important thing here is to not give up on the American People! [if you’re an American]

But more to the point of kajutisg question:
When I first stumbled on to this site I was very impressed with the knowledgeable help I received, and most of it concerned safety and learning to ride what looks like a motor cycle. As a newbee, common sense told me not to try and redesign the wheel but to start with a proven rig, kajutisg, has but a couple choices, a Liberty hack or a TLE and if he can’t afford a new deal then find a used one and have it professionally installed, but don’t advise him to buy a $29.95 rig and zip strap it to the bike and use several grand kids for ballast.
