This whole thing is getting VERY boring, If YOU can tell us or show us somthing new please do.Repeating over and over the same thing is going NOWHERE and not worth the time to read. I would like to learn somthing new but it apears there is nouthing to confrum or add

I agree 100% w/ Ron.
HackEllis is just playing a game. Recall he started with this as his thread:
Go back to the beginning. Posted 7/4/2006.
"Got back from a 900 mile trip to Oregon. Had a great ride! I tested out my new theory of a car tire in both the rear and front. I found the rig to handle 200% easier and the ride improved. To say the least the test was a complete sucess and I now plan to keep the set up.
Happy 4th!
Mike"
Now it appears that he is 100 % opposed. He has problems.
Gotta hand it to him. He can sure talk outa both ends.
I agree that this thread has vastly outlived it's informational capabilities.
If the arguments must continue why not go off site to continue?
It's getting like Roe vs Wade.

I do understand the confusion. It is true that my rig has a car tire successfully installed and used on a 15" motorcycle rim. However, after exhaustive worldwide research I have come to the conclusion that the use of a car tire (no matter the size) is not a wise management of risk for a motorcycle. There are to many unknowns to make it safe.
There are many facts that we are in agreement on. But it is my opinion and the opinion of the Tire manufactures, Tire and Rim Association and all motorcycle manufactures that this is not an acceptable risk.
If that is the case, then DO NOT USE a car tire Then you won't be way youwon't be taking a RISK. Also YOU won't be boring others with your BS

A long time ago (when this thread started), I thought it was going to provide some new info on the use of car tires. This person from Stockton, CA hasn't provided ANY supporting documentation. I , for one, am done reading this thread.
I truly do understand the frustration and your positions. We are not that far apart.
My information was collected from some of the best in the sidecar industry with years of experience. This experience should be heeded. The risk is to great.
Please shut this tired BS down. You have contibuted nothing with your rants. You continue to drive around with auto tires on your 15 inch rims yet keep telling others how unsafe it is to do so. If it is so unsafe, then set a good example and tell us that you have taken them off and gone back to MC tires. Or clamp up.
Yes, I have taken the car tires off and put motorcycle tires back on. I was scared of what the consequences could be.
Hmmmm, how do I stop getting this thread's alerts? (Maybe just by unclicking "Notify you ...")

The problem - if you had studied the posts - was in the fitment. We have never heard of a single case where a tire has exploded in this fashion during service - ie - by ripping out from the bead at the rim - once the tire was actually installed. Once you get it on it has generally stayed until it rots or wears out or blows out in the conventional mannner. However, your peace of mind is now easier.
I have had tires that blew out in the conventional manner in service - the entire sidewall is destroyed - not a single rip beginning from the rim because of overpressure.
The installation of the tire is not what scared me. There are work arounds for the tire installation i.e.. use a cage. What worried me was the information that I received regarding the pressures on the sidewalls. If the rig is ridden in a reasonable manner (conservatively) not many issues. The issue comes on hard cornering or when one is flying the car. The car tire sidewall is put under stress that it was never designed for. The risk of a sidewall failure under those conditions is statistically absurd. That is the reason I took the car tires off.

On the bottom of this page is a line that says "toggle email notification". It will let you drop the thread.

How are these stresses ANY different from those of ANY 2-track vehicle, ie, a car, PU, SUV, etc when driven in a spirited manner? Never heard of sidewall failures of a car tire fitted to a car due to its being driven in a spirited manner. The sidewall failures I have experienced with auto tires have been when the tire has been scrapped along the sidewall - such as by going off the road and rubbing the sidewall on the raw concrete edge. This has happened on three almost new auto tires on auto rims. Another almost new auto tire on a auto rim exploded at walking speed when the sidewall touched a sidewall. It was another top of the line tire $225. The auto sidewalls are not very tough. Never allow them to be scrapped. Period. That will kill them very quickly. Had another that was scrapped. Slightly. Took a month before it blew.
Another instance, auto tire on an auto rim exploded at 70 mph with 2/3 tread depth remaining. That was a V rated (135 mph tire). That tire was almost new in appearance. It was a 15SR225 Dunlop. That tire had never had ANY sidewall damage. Ever. But it had aged. So ALL tires were at once replaced.
MC sidewalls are certainly much tougher. By design. That might be of concern to you but it was not a point of any of these discussions. It is another concern entirely. Glad that was finally out in the open. Sure cleared the air.
A bit of a side note. The tire engineer that I spoke too explained car suspension, brakes, tires etc... He showed me studies on tire sizes and what happens when you purchase tires that are not within the auto/truck manufactures recommendations for the vehicle. The stresses, performance, braking suffer exponentially when the wrong size is installed. I am sure the same is for motorcycles and sidecars. Given those facts and that I don't have the expertise or smarts to make that call, the car tires came off of my bike. Not willing to put my life on the line just yet.
