Graham,
I asked more or less the same question here a couple of weeks ago.... My question was more like 'Should I install a belt' vs 'How to'.. link below.

I recall that someone posted that a race car style five point hitch would be good for a small person...

I take it that is why you want to install the belt..?

Best,
Rob

I have read your thread and had pretty much decided already that I wanted to install a shoulder belt of some sort. Primarily to prevent "face" damage to the passenger (mine is seven)in the event of a sudden stop. While no one wants to think about getting into a situation like that, I would like to take as much caution as possible. Full face helmet? sure, but I want her to have full rein over her senses while touring at the same time, Probably going to go with a motocross type helmet with goggles or something, up for ideas on that too.

Also, I have been thinking about the saftey issue in general in regards to the sidecar with my most special person inside. I think I am about to scare myself out of using the thing all together. I have been hit before and realize the risk I am taking riding solo. But I have her to think about. My plan was to take nice little cruises down the back roads of amish country, as that is very close to me. But I scare myself thinking about the "Others" out "Cruising" the back roads too (maybe because I crusied with the others a time or two).

In the event of a crash of more serious magnitude, if the seat belt was attached to the frame of the hack, would not the body of the car be pushed over, around, or past the person in the belt? If the belt was mounted more to the body of the car in a more secure way than the obvious bolt through the body trick which pops to mind, would this allow the body and passenger to be "pushed" out of the way rather than pushed through? Although I guess if being pushed is an option the whole rig would be pushed anyway.

I just want to her to have a good time and be safe.

Is that a 563 you have there?

Thanks
Graham

I would think a roll bar and perimiter frame would be necessary to make any kind of seat belt useful instead of hopeful. ?

I made a two seater from a velorex 700.
I put two rollbars in it with two 4-point seatbelts ( taken from two childrens carseats ).
In the photoalbum is a picture of my GS850 with redesigned velorex 700.
But my kids grow older so I had to sell this one.
I planning on building an other sidecar ( I already builded one by myself ).
And yes, sorry for my english.

Greetings,

Ingmar

The 562s have been equipped with harnesses for upper body support of handicapped passengers. Usually they are attached to the luggage rack after fender washers have been added. The 700 series is much easier to mount a harness on since they have a roll bar type tube that is above shoulder high and a better harness mount.
This works for upper body support but you aren't going to get any amount of collision protection in any sidecar that I'm familiar with.
Steel bodied or fiberglass, most bodies can separate from the frame fairly easily and become part of the problem.
A sidecar passenger is much more protected than the pilot in almost all collisions.
With a prudent driver your 7 year old is much safer in a sidecar than on a solo bike. Or in a boat (the water kind), or swimming in the river, lake or ocean, or eating at McDonalds as far as her wellbeing is concerned.

I commend you guys for searching for a 5-point shoulder belt ----- BUT ---- I sure wish you'd also VERY seriously consider a full face helmet for BOTH your passenger and you. I know it doesn't make it "right" but Luke and I both always have ours on.
