What would be the best side car to use on our 05 1200R sportster. We would want to haul our camping gear and 70# dog on an extended (retirement) tour. We have many many many miles on motorcycles but are new to side cars. Help!! steve

Steven,

You said "..We would want to haul our camping gear and 70# dog .."

Are you looking for a sidecar for you, your companion, your dog, and hauling your camping gear? If this is the case, you would need a LARGE sidecar unless you carry your dog in the sidecar and your companion on the bike's passenger seat (it may end up quite unsafe and I do not suggest it).

Now a LARGE sidecar may not be the ideal choice. your Harley 1200R Sporster. Besides, you would have to make changes to your Sportster as well (wider handle bar, Steerite with stiffer front springs or Earls forks, etc.).

Decide first how many passengers (including your dog) you want to have and how much weight you need to pull. For limited weight and only one passenger the Motorvation Spyder (Sibley, Iowa) is a very nice sidecar (they offer a Harley type sidecar fender as well) or get in touch with Jay or Tara at Dauntless Motors in Covington, Washington 253-638-1793. Jay and Tara may have more sidecar choices for your Sporters.

Steve,
If there are three of you that will be sharing the same rig, I would consider a 1 1/2 wide or a so called "double" wide. Both passengers in the sidecar for stability. Two on the bike and Bowser in the boat is not the safest way to go unless there is a lot of ballast in the sidecar to offset the extra bike load.
For single sidecars, Velorex has several choices, well accessorized at reasonable prices.
Kenna has a 1 1/2 wide and a single also for reasonable price.
Motorvation has both for a little higher prices.
There are others offering more expensive doubles but most would be quite large for the Sportster, at least aestheticly, in my opinion.
