Wheelchair rig for BMW
I'm looking for ideas on how to buy or build a rig to carry my wheelchair and to attach it to my 1999 BMW R1100RT. Basically, it'll be a sidecar without the tub...just a deck onto which I can strap down my chair. I don't need a ramp as I am able to lift the chair. I need suspension and a brake. And need to be cost efficient. Please reply with your ideas, resources and referrals. Hoping y'all can help.
DMC sells a rolling chassis with or without a brake. Your Beemer will also need a subframe for mounting and probably steering mods for easy control. Not cheap. DMCsidecars.com 1-866-638-1793

Your R1100RT needs a fairly exstensive sub frame, we make one that does not require a lot of plastic to be cut, Looks pretty much stock on the plastic once cut. The sub frame runs $800. You may wish to lower the steering effort with the sidecar, $350 for the parts to do this, If you are going to put a lot of miles on the bike in the long run you will save money if you go with an automotive rear wheel on the bike $1295. The Kenna frame would be a way to start. Another way would be to order the entire Kenna sidecar which includes your sub frame for only $3395, You can put your chair in the sidecar and if you want to also carry a passenger, the Kenna has a receiver hitch built into the back of it so you can mount a trailer hitch type wheel chair rack in it for your passenger to load for you.
Of course we will sell you as much or as little as you want of these parts.
I assume that you will also need hand controls. We have used the Pingle shifter on the 5 speed BMW bikes, it works well, not so well on the 6 speed bikes as the 3-4 shift takes a tad longer stroke. Your brakes can all be tied to the front brake, it does take some work to get this part right.
We just did an R1100RT last week with one of our M72D sidecars for some one in Port Angles Washington, came out nice, we have also done the Kenna and the Champion Escort on the RT.
For any one else reading this tread looking for a wheel chair set up, we have for sale an old very crudly built Tomco (ride from the wheel chair) sidecar for a honda CB750A and a honda CB750A. for sale $750. The bike has not been started in years and had a bad oil leak from the head gasket. The sidecar was never on this bike, we do not know for sure if all the parts are there for hooking it up to the bike, we do know that the nose cone is missing from the sidecar as we used it on another wheel chair bike we built a while back. So far this year we have finished 4 sidecars for wheel chiars and are workiing on another for some one to ride who is a quadraplegic. He can move his arms but not his fingers and has limited strengh so it is getting power steering and power brakes a power remote controled ramp and reverse.

AT Old Fort Harley Davistion, at Fort Smith Ar.. There head mech is in a wheel chair. His sidecar looks like the nose is a front of a Calf.sidecar tub. It has a alum. floor and fold up ramp. he just rolles up into it pulles the ramp up and crawls over the seat and he ready to go. All foot controls he change to hand controls. He tells me that it's his truck . His sidecar is connected to a Harley I think the same kind of set up would work on a BMW with a sub-frame. unless it has a loop frame.Rudy
Thanks to all for input. Should specify that I am able to stand and lift my chair onto a deck such as proposed. Also, my left foot is my worst but I'm able to shift so I won't need an electronic shifter or other alteration to the shifter (not yet). There's some ideas worth pursuing here and I have enough to get started but I'll welcome any other input.
The Pashnit site has a link to handicap sidecars, and while searching earleier today, I saw a group on yahoo groups that dealt with handicap sidecars. Plug in handicap sidecar or just go to sidecar on the group search and you can probably locate it. Not sure how active or how good or bad the site was. Good luck in finding something good to help.
And 'the head of Mach is wheelchair accessible. His nose looks like a sidecar is a bathroom Calf.sidecar front. It is an alum. floor and the ramp folded. just pull up Pules ramp up and crawl around on the seat and he's ready to leave.
His nose looks like a sidecar is a bathroom Calf.sidecar front. It is an alum. floor and the ramp folded. Rolles Pulles just has to ramp up and crawling across the seat and he's ready to leave. All controls of the foot, turns into a hand control. He says that his truck.
Thanks to all for ideas. Got it done w/ frame from DMC and some improvisation for the counterbalancing. New job is to build fiberglass shell for the chair. I think I've got that under control. -Art
