Will be buying Tarzian rear wheel for our GL1500 rig in June. Learned it takes 165R15 auto tire[possibly other sizes, too?]. Just wondered what brand's recommended by Wingnuts here who use this setup on their rigs. Thanks in advance.....

buy the cheapest you can find at the local auto tire store..
$40 or so. they all work fine om the rear of SC. 20-25,000 miles on them

PapaSmurf,
As you know Harry and I are good friends and only live about 40 miles apart. We both do wheel conversions.
The 165/80x15(165R15) is the tire both of us use the most. It runs between 50 and 65 bucks in most places. You can also use a 155 a 145 or even a 135 tire but they are harder to get and more expensive as a rule.
Some have used the 155 tire as it is a little smaller in diameter but not that much. I am not familar with the 145 at all. The 135 is smaller yet in diameter but is used by some who want a lower rig.
Anyhow, as far as brand goes I have not seen much difference at all between various brands as far a milage and performance goes. We used a lot of Kuhmo tires last year but have used others as well.
Lowest milege we have had reported was on a large BMW K1200LT with a large Hannigan pulling a Large trailer that ran a lot in the hot southwest and texas. That tire was replaced at 16,000 miles. Even at that when comparing it to a costly motorcycle tire the savings can be appreciated. The best milage reported was on a K11/ Terraplane rig at over 40,000 !! I still question that but ya never know. Average milages are between 20 and 25,000 as Bob mentioned.

papasmurf - I just bought a wheel conversion from Dauntless for the GL1500 Honda with a Cooper Metric Sportmaster GLT size 165R15 tire. I haven't mounted the wheel yet and also don't know how much the tire itself costs. Got to last longer than the 5,000 miles each I have been getting. Ralf

I'm running a Nexen Brand 165/80R15 car tire with a tube on
my VTX 1300s. That size is hard to find in my area and the
Nexen was the only one I could find locally. I'm quite pleased
with it and NO handling differences were apparent in the install.
It was about $55.00 out the door as I recall.

you say you do wheel conversions? does that mean you make or convert a wheel for a GL1500? I have been told to source a 15 inch rear wheel as advantages in gearing would be better not to mention the saving and choice of tyres. I dont want to railroad this thread but would value your opinion

At this time we do not do a wheel conversion for a GL1500. Harry Tarzian however does. His number is 814 349 2414 here in the states.
As far as advantages in gearing go, yes, it can be had but it isn't related to th e15" wheel directly as much as what tire is mounted on it. Most conversions that Harry and I do run a 165r15 tire which is about the same diameter or a little more than stock. Some run a 155 which is alittle smaller. Some have run a 135r15 which is quite a bit smaller and does make a difference in final gearing.
Some tires are inexpensive like the 165 and some are more costly like th e135 tire. In any case the change to a car tire on a rig has advatages in the long run compared to using a motorcycle tire.
