Afternoon, all.
OK, yesterday I went for my first long ride, just over 400 miles, and too much of it in heavy downpours. Rig handled very well, both on the interstate and on the twisty Pennsylvania back roads.
During the trip, I started getting this strange sqeaking noise, and on the road I could not pinpoint it, made me paranoid, to say the least. When I got home, I found that noise was coming from hack suspension, Friendship 2 with the Volksvagen springs, and at least the newer needle bearing instead of the bushing. So, I pulled it apart, spring pack intact but rusty, and bearing still had grease but crusty. cleaned things up, and here is question, I used some differential gear lube on the spring pack, I think that should be OK? Then I repacked needle bearing with chassis grease, reassembled, sqeak is gone, and nice smooth movement. Thoughts on this?

Sounds like you're good to go. Most don't maintain the suspension on their sidecars for some reason.

Well, I've been a lifelong mechanic, mostly heavy equipment, so I do try to take care of my own stuff now that I'm retired. I am really disapointed in the quality of work that today's kids (to me) do now. I've witnessed where some don't even know how to remove a rear brake drum from a truck, and they were hired as qualified????? Scary stuff.
