Subframe for Honda GL1200 Interstate
I have a 1985 GL and, providing the deal goes through, will be mating it with a 2005 Velorex 565. In the General Discussion Forum I was advised that in addition to ballast, I would also need a subframe to facilitate the mounting. The Velorex was previously mounted on a Honda Valkyrie using the universal mounting kit from Velorex but I'm not clear on the frame differences between the Valk and my Wing and have not discussed (with seller of the Velorex) whether or not a subframe was involved while he had it mounted on his Valk. Would like to know if anyone has or can direct me to information on what this subframe looks like; if it can be fabricated or is better purchased and, if purchased, where. If fabricated, where I might locate the specifications & template to do so. Thanks much, Bljacque.
The Valk is a naked bike. The GL is not. You will need a mount set that consists of 2 sub-frames to get through all the plastic to the frame properly. If you have the optional adjustable passenger footboards you might consider replacing them with the nonadjustable ones. The right side one will interfere with mounting the rear sub-frame. It can be removed and the sidecar strut can be used for a footpeg on the right side.
Sub-frame vendors can be found on this site linked from the home page or spot ads.
You will need ballast. 2 pieces of steel plate 1"x7"x28" bolted or welded to the sidecar frame below the body weigh 80# and are out of the way without interfering with anything.

I have had 2 GL1100's and never needed a subframe. The frame of the wing is heavy enough. But the Velorex is a bad choice for the 1200, you'll need lot's of ballast.I'd suggest selling the Velorex and look for a bigger sidecar. I have had 4 Velorexesout of 11 sidecars over the last 28 years and they are good sc for the money, the need to go on a lighter bike. Had a Velorex on a '79 Suzuki 850 about 7 years ago and that was a bad combination for even after 20 years of riding. Doug
