In the process of painting and rebuilding a Sputnik sidecar that is going to go onto an F650GS, I've come to conclusion that the spring on the shock is very stiff. I tried compressing the shock on the frame with me and some additional weight but it did not budge. Therefore, I assume, that this will be a rough ride for my passenger.

Is there an alternative spring that I can use?

The Sputnik shocks I have seen have been way too soft. I suggest you try it first.

Ken Winters posted (somewhere here I think)he was looking for ways to stiffen up the suspension on his Sputnik. I bet he'd trade with you...

I've decided to try to trade. The spring is way to firm to the point it crushes the black rubber bumper. I placed 350 pounds and no compression. BTW: the shock itself is soft with a very slow rebound. Future mode to replace that.

I do have some spare snowmobile shock springs which may be the same diameter and height. Its late now so I wont be trying this till Monday.

Meanwhile--said spring is available for trade.

Try a search for sputnik on SideCarTalk in the Yahoo forums and you will find Ken
