sportster flasher

I have an 05 Sportster with 2007 model Velorex sidecar. After I attached the car's lighting by splicing into the taillight harness underneath the seat I removed right front and rear turn signal bulbs on the bike. Now I get rapid flashing on the right. After a search on here I read that the fix is to install a heavy duty flasher. I don't see a flasher in the wiring diagram in my factory service manual, but I do see an apparently expensive box-shaped TSM (turn signal module), not the little silver metal can-shaped flasher like I am used to seeing and that are sold in auto parts stores everywhere for about 5 bucks. Does anyone know, do I not have a flasher?
Thanks, Brendan

I have a 93 Harley Tour Glide with a Harley TLE sidecar. When I installed it I took out the rear right bike turn signal bulb but not the front. Mine works fine this way. I know the systems are probably different but try putting the front bulb back in and see what happens. I also have an electronic turn signal module and not the old style flasher.

On some bikes we end up putting the bikes turn signal bulbs on the sidecar so that they draw the same current, as such this always fixes the problem.
BTW, Here is a link showing how we mount a similar to yours set up http://www.dmcsidecars.com/the-result-of-improper-sidecar-mounting-and-the-proper-fix/

Another fix is to leave the bulbs in and black out the lens on the bikes right side. Did this on my Vulcan rig and it worked perfectly. They still worked you just coud not see them. If this is a dedicated rig the easy way is to remove the lens and paint the inside of the lens, or if not buy one extra set of lens paint and change if sidecar is removed.

the resistance has to be *exactly* the same or the tssm will freak out.

and no - there is no flasher its a hd custom patented unit that has the stuff that makes it self canceling inside, thats why nobody else has self canceling turn signals that work as good. its one of the things hd has done so well that i always wonder why they don't market it to other oems and make a pile of cash....

either way to get it to work right its going to have to be perfect

another way to skin the cat is a load balancer sold by the aftermarket to make led turn signals work - you can tap the load balancer to run the sidecar and it will make the tssm think its got a bulb.

by the way the fast flash? thats the code that you have a turn signal bulb out, its a safety feature.........

Yes it flashes fast on the right side only. All the lights seem to be working on the right side but I'll have to take a closer look. I installed some front LED turn signals on a Ducati and someone had figured out that you had to install a resistor (1k ohm maybe) from radio shack in parallel with each signal to get them to work right. On this setup I would guess that the resistance is higher on the sidecar what with the 5 pin trailer connector and smaller gauge wires on the Velorex. Those Badlands aftermarket units replace the TSSM or are they an add- on? Thanks, Brendan

most units are add ons that plug into the harness under the seat - the tssm does a lot more than just flasher, if you remove it prepare to spend many hours wiring stuff.

one complication with the new bikes - no points - no advance - no rotor - no carburetor [a 05 has a carb i think] all computerized... it takes a LOT of work to change anything - and it takes a LOT of work and a LOT of money to take a injected bike and make it carb & points.

All the more reason to just paint and black out inside of right signal lens.
