15 year old California Friendship III. The seat cushion foam does not support much. What/where is the best place to buy good seat foam rubber?

Thanks for replies

You are not far from Portland, I used to live near Portland Ore. Here are a couple of places from which I have bought upolstery materials.

Perfect Fit-McDonald Inc
(503) 234-9325
800 SE 10th Ave
Portland, OR 97214 - 2548

The owner of Perfect Fit was a member of a T series MG club I used to be a member of, they sell all kinds of upolstery materials, nice people.

or

A-1 Foam Rubber
(503) 257-8387
8040 SE Stark St
Portland, OR 97215 - 2344

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dave. FYI I called Perfect Fit awhile back for an unrelated issue. At that time they made it clear they would not sell to a private party, only a wholesaler or dealer.

I will give A-1 a call.

Bruce,
You might do about as well with a auto or boat upholstery shop for small purchases such as this.

Dave,
In years past that was called Perfect Fit seat covers.
When I had my shop in Portland I was heavily into MG TD's. Used to build, modify, reload with V8's and race them, much to the chagrin of the purist "Teabaggers" as we called them.
Along with Pat Vidan (longtime flagger at Indy and ex flagger at Portland Speedway) and several others we founded Oregon Auto Racing Ass'n. (OARA) in the sixties which put Sports car racing on the map in the northwest. First at Portland Speedway, then at Vanport, now called Portland International Raceways (PIR). Before that we had to trek up to Arlington, WA airport for a haybale circuit course or go to California.

I still have my TD. It's XPAG engine is bored out to 1600 cc and I have 11:1 pistons in it, It is in primer now and waiting for paint and upolstery.

A different idea: I replaced the original, ripped and not-comfortable, seat in Luke's California with a Jeep aftermarket seat from J.C. Whitney. It was about $100 and dropped in perfectly.

Just food for thought.

I spent 22 years as a Mechanic for British Leyland. My all time favorite car was a MG TF with a Range Rover 215 V8 grafted into it by the previous owner. Actually, my favorite was an original left hand drive 1937 SS100 that I bought for $5,000 and sold for $12,000 two months later. Unfortunately I didn't know there were only twelve left hand models produced. Today it's worth substantially more. But the guy who bought it mortgaged his house to have it restored, which I would not have done, so he deserved it more than me.

Back on topic, Marinas also have supplies of seat foam.

Dave,
I tried a Stage III conversion once in my '50 TD. That was my last attempt at loading a Brit engine. While running it in before racing it a rod gave way and I gave it a coup de gras with 8 - 6.5 Mauser rounds through the hood (I've mellowed somewhat with age since the fifties). I replaced it with a 239 CI Studebaker Hemi head with a top loader BW box with 26% overdrive & spicer 4.56 in back.
Fun rig, with full hood sides and 15 1" holes drilled in each rear wheel it appeared stock and fooled a lot of the upper caste teabaggers on the street and would outrun a 456 Porsche. The next reload was an Olds with 6 Stromberg 48 Carbs for B/MP racing.
Now the seat part:
I had to move the firewall back 18" to shoehorn the V8 in so the stock seats went. I put in Kellison Astro buckets (like Spirit Eagle and CSC companions had). High density foam and marine vinyl covers finished them off . Beautiful seats, but the most uncomfortable ones I have had in my life. No lumbar support at all.
