Riding in the snow , help with tires?

I am hoping someone here will have some experience with this. We have a harley with a californa hack on it. It's my wife's. Since it does not fall down she thought it might be fun to go riding in the snow. Were in the Cascade mountains and get quite a bit. I finally found a tire that looks like it will work. We have spare sacrifical wheels. You can see the tire here:Click on dual sport. Click on duro. Click on HF903/904 MEDIAN It is a rear 16. I'm thinking of running another on the front for better directional stability and possible braking power? I'm guessing it's a better idea than just the conti tour that we run in the summer. I really don't know. What do you think? Should I run the front dual sport tire forward or backward? As slow as we will be going and as cold as it will be I am not worried about tire failure. I might gain braking if I ran it backwards but it might not be able to clear itself out either. It's also possible that no matter how much tread there is it may just plug and a street tire would be just as good and better on Ice? I am hoping someone on this forum might have been down this road already. We live up in the mountains on dirt roads and we have to get up some hills to get back home. I am pretty sure this tire will do the job. If not we wil tow it up the offending hill with the truck. We don't expect to do a lot of touring, just have some fun. We both have heated gear and if we get serious about it we can always put a canvas apron on the crash bars to direct the motor heat over the rider. For now we are just keeping it simple. I am certain some of you are doing this, is there anything that we need to know?

the rope was my only way to go on in Norway December 1986 (2 snow storms), since then It worked fine in mud too, bbbuuuutttt as you may read in the roads to go- section.... I didn't take it with me on the travel happy as a cow-trip. (I'll better get a new one and some pulleys just for the bike)

The spikes made a great job. (only at -28ºC I overforced them and made a Salto Mortale in 1 m deep snow, because my left foot peg hit the left edge of the road....yeehoouu!!!!) I had to pull the spikes out on a frozen 5.january because the german cosoums officer didn't want to let me into the country.
