Oil cooler for Ultra
Im Sure there is some on out on this site who has or knows of a aftermarket oil cooler for my 06 ultra...couldn't believe Harly dosen't make one that will work with the sidecar....go figure. Well Anyone got a suggestion??? Thanks in advance....Ed
Here a pic of the object of my afliction...
the problem is that on the newer bikes there is very very little room for the filter AND the brake Res is in the way and the brake hose is in the way.
the filter bases that offset the filter move it up..
what ive been considering is getting a adapter that replaces the filter and has two hose fittings on it. then mount a remote filter mount and the filter from the right front crash bar near the sidecar body.
so far its the only idea ive had that no "functional" issues.
but im open to ideas
ps - i did have a factory se unit on my 2000 ultra and there is physically NO WAY to get the lower mounts on with that either.

I bought an automotive automatic transmission cooler back in 1983 for my FX and it has been on since. I modifed the in and out spigets and made my own mounts. It is bigger and cheaper than anything the 'good ole boys' at your H-D dealership or any aftermarket supplier have to offer. Also back in the 70's and 80's a lot of guys used the little power steering coolers from some Ford cars.
And those old ford power steering coolers worked quite well and cheap to!
I also ride an 06 Ultra.I run Amsoil in it. That is 100% synthetic. That being said, one of the benefits is it does run a bit cooler. I have not seen the need for an oil cooler even out here in the deserts of New Mexico. If I were to run a cooler, I would go with the transmission cooler. That sounds the least expensive. You can also check out JC Whitny, or Kuyriaken. Not sure about those spellings there. If you think you would be interested look at my site. www.lubedealer.com/danzoils.
the hassle of a cooler is accessing the oil - there are no hoses any more so a filter adapter is needed - the one that comes on the 110's wont clear the sidecar mounts.
what is needed is a way to tap where the filter is and move the filter somewhere else along with the cooler.

Ed, I put a Jagg ten row oil cooler on my 05 FLHTCI mounted on the right side engine guard. The Jagg cooler mount has to be modified as where it was designed to fit it doesn't clear the sidecar mounts on the left frame tube. Access to the return oil line is underneath a small cover on the right hand side of the engine. (i believe the 06 has the same cover, I know the 08 access is gone and all you can use is the oil filter adaptor) With a couple of adaptors (45 degree fitting and a straight nipple) from the auto parts store and good quality hydraulic hose it can be accomplished. Pay attention to the clearance of the hoses between the frame and the engine.

i made a cardboard cutout of the filter adapter from a 110 and it wont clear the mounts and the cylinder - its designed to tilt forward a bit. the filter barely clears the 07 mounts.
any ideas of how to remote mount the filter? my next "plan" is to get a block of aluminum and turn a adapter this winter.

tim, check out this set up ( http://www.jerrysrigssystems.com/) it is spendy, but maybe it will give you some ideas if you decide to fabricate something

ok, there we go - the first thing ive seen that will actually work on a twincam harley with a sidecar
thanks

All of this proves 1 thing, Harley wants ALL your money. You bought 'our' bike so now you are stuck buying everything from us, if we don't make it you don't need it. Thank God there are people out there that are as 'smart or smarter' than the bast... at H-D Motor Company.
Dang there's a bunch of smart people on here...thanks so much for all the input...i'm leaning twards the jerrys rig(just cause less mess when changing oil) if i can't turn out my own....Again thanks everyone!!! Ed
Thats a pretty cool system. Another benefit to installing that kit would be that you can put on a taller filter. For example, AMSOIL sells the EaoM134C filter for my 06 Ultra. Well the EaoM135C is the same filter but longer giving you more filter. You can find them at www.lubedealer.com/danzoils. I'm not sure if other brands sell longer ones or not.
