New Motor Break in ?????
I am going to be putting in a brand new 2004 SE 103" factory crate motor in my 2003 FLHRCi.
I've never done an engine break-in with a sidecar and was wondering what are the guide lines,...would it be the same as a 2 wheeler???
Any and all suggestions please.
Pretty much the same routine will apply. No hard starts, moderate motor RPM in all gears, no lugging and vary speeds for the first several miles. Don't let it idle too long.

Basically what he said. I spend the first 300 miles being completely tedious- keeping the top down below 45mph and then gradually working my way up in varying loads and speeds. I also think dino oil is best for the first 600 miles so things break-in / seat properly.
At 3 to 500 miles, I do a complete service including torquing heads and checking valves, all oils and filters.
Come to think of it- do you have hydraulic lifters on that? Am I too used to old bikes?

Well in case of a brand new engine, after now 2 rebuilds I would consider the following:
Run in at least 3000km = 2000 miles on 2 wheels on each trip at least 30 miles better 100 or more per day on twisty roads where you aught to change gears frequently. I took several times vacations in low and middle mountain range for that purpose. Best when temperature is over 15ΒΊC and below 28ΒΊC without rain.
Afterwards continue with a still "runnig in" moderate gas hand but a free spinning engine on 3 wheels until 6000km = 3750 miles. Don't push torque at low revs.
Best results in engine performance I had frequently between 15.000 and 35.000km = 9.000 to 22.000 miles.
In case you think of running with syntetic oil, first run in the engine with standard oil recommended by the factory (possibly 2000 to 5000 miles) , then make the oil change to synthetic, but already after 300 miles change again for to be sure there is no conventional oil left and that you wash out all debrids loosened by the synthetic oil.
Sounds that are numbers of old ages with uncoated grey cast cylinders and pistons, but I did have my good results with it, and do not think about damaging a new engine just for fun. It shall run for many years, not just a few races.

Yeah, I agree with most of this. My BMW had an 800 mile run in at no more than 4000 rpm out of a total of almost 7000. Also vary the rpm up and down either by gear or just speed in gear. BMW wants you to stay above 3500 on this bike, but they build a s--- load of the midel, R1200C, with tachs. Go figure. But I did run mine in for the 800 below 4000 with dino oil and then up to 6000 with dino oil. After 9000, i switched to mobil 1 syn and then again at 12000 mobil 1 15/50 syn. Still using it at 63000. Don't use any or leak any. And all the time hauling a hack. I now change every 6000 miles with filter and oil, and just haven't had any problems. I am using molly syn in tranny and rear drive every 12000, with no problems either. Maybe it is because I have an 04 Montauk which is just like the CLC of that year, where I think they made some changes to a few mechanical points that things are working out as good as they are. But I had an R90/6 for several years and over 250K miles without a hitch other than normal wear and tear. We ride good bikes, and I really believe the ones made on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are better then the Monday and Friday bikes. Some break down, some don't. No guarantees, but the BMW's do seem to last a long time.

Thanks for the input guy's,
This was what I was planning to do.
I have a Thundermax ECM on my rig now with the stock 88 TC,..the mods I have are I capped off my cross over pipe installed wide band 02 sensors and run stock headers for a 2-1 exhaust with a Thunder Head slip on muffler and K & N air filter.
So I will be loading a new base map for the 103" motor,..the first step in setting up the ECM module is to let it idle while the Thundermax starts doing it's thing in a mode called IAC which in turn shuts off when it reaches head temp of 275 degrees,.. which might take up to 10-min. of idle depending on how cold it is in my garage at the time,.. then the bike is ready to start riding.
I was planning on keeping the rpm's no less than 2,800 rpm ( I will set my idle at 1,100 rpm) and no more than 4,000 in any gear,..for the 1st 75 miles,..which means I probably won't even get into 4th gear so speed should be below 50-mph,..then change the dino oil.
Then the same for 200 miles,..change oil again,..then start working my way up to 65-mph still keeping the same rpm's on flat roads no hills,..then 500 miles change oil for a total of 775 miles on the new motor.
I then figured it would be broke in and I will drive my usual,...I never take my bike over 5,000-rpm in any gear,..close sometimes in second gear but never over.
Even though this CVO 103" comes with HD synthetic I will use dino for 2,500 to 3,500 and then will probably go to Mobil1 V-Twin 20/50 syn.
Does this sound about right,.. any and all comments will be appreciated,...thanks

More milege for break in. No ideling, run under easy load.
that's all from me.
