Leg room in a side car

Anyone have any input on which sidecars have the most legroom? I'm looking at adding an inexpensive sidecar to my Valkyrie Interstate and so far the Dnepr and the Ural have the look I prefer and cost is in my ballpark. Also I like a steel box vs fiberglass if I'm shopping used. I'm not concerned about weather protection, long range comfort or storage space. But my fiance is 6'2" with LONG legs so if she won't fit it's a waste of time. We've got a Ural dealer close by so we might 'try one on for size'.

First of all let me start out by saying how greatly impressed I am that your fiancee is 6'2' with long legs. God had blessed you my man! I am 6'5" and can fit into my Ural rig. My guess is she is right at the very edge of being comfortable. There is a guy name Rich from Seattle who makes very affordable custom seats for the Urals if comfort becomes an issue. I could probably do a 1-2 hour trip as a passenger. I suspect she would do better. Hope this helps.

Dr.,
Do you have any more information on how to get in touch with Richard who makes the custom Ural sidecar seats?

On leg room in a Ural SC, I'd say a six footer is pushing it for comfort. I have a Ural SC on my R60/2 and at 5'-11" I can stretch my legs forward to front wall.

Hey Doc, Do you mean Rich Maund? He does alot of Ural stuff, but he's from Chesapeake, VA. not Seattle, so you might have someone else in mind. Rich Maund has a seat on eBay right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=35612&item=2446745628 or write him at rmaund@pinn.net I'd also like to say that my son is 6'4" and 245 lbs. and has never complained about the leg room or comfort in the sidecar

I have two rigs; one with the Ural SC, the other with the Dnepr SC.
Wife (5'7") says she can put her purse in front of her feet in the Ural with room to spare. No room for that in the Dnepr and she has to bend her legs (slightly) more in the Dnepr.

Sorry to be just getting back to you just now. The previous poster had it right on, Rich is from VA. Must have mixed him up with Jay Giese from Dauntless (Seattle) who makes a "boffo" subframe for the Ural. I am going to mpick up one of his seats after I add my Perry Bushong triple tree.

I wound up putting a Jeep after market seat from Whitney's (only $110 or so) in our California. I was world's better for Luke. Fortunately, I was able to drive to their store and actually try it in the rig before buying. Obviously, that won't be the case for you.

Good luck,

Ron and Luke

Thanks for the input of using an adaptable car type seat. I'll take some measurements of the seat space in my side car and see what may be usable. This could turn out to be an interesting Spring time project.

One thing I forgot to mention:
Both the Ural and Dnepr SCs stock seat bottoms are close to parallel to the ground. Adding a piece of 2X2 lumber under the front of the seat bottom does wonders for comfort/thigh support.
Both Ural and Dnepr seats are NOT high-tech and can be re-done (thinner/thicker) with ease.

The "flatness" of some stock sidecar seats (e.g., the one that was in our Calif.) was one of the reasons I looked for something better. It was really tough for Luke to get up from such a position. (It's still hard, but a little easier on my back.) The Jepp seat raised his butt a couple of inches higher. Warning: the top on the sidecar no longer works. Luke's head hits it. I guess maybe the next thing I'll try to do is get a new (higher) top made.

Thank you for the entry to use a type of adaptive car seat. I'll take some measurements of space in my seat side-car and see what can be useful.
