Brake hook up for 2003 HD roadkind and SideCar
I just bought a 2005 HD side car for my bike. The frame line up just find and the mounts are on. The brake are given me a little trouble. Can any one send me a picture of how the brake lines are set up? Also, whay does this second reserve for the brakes says it need Dot 4, but my bike runs on dot 5, how do I get this too to get along? Thank for any help.

Any other picture that show all the connection would be great so I can ensure that I have done it right.
Don't mix DOT 4 and DOT 5! You'll clog the entire system mixing those. Harley switched to DOT 4 in 2005. Unless you have brand new lines/caliper, there really isn't a good way to clean them either. You may need to swap those components out (sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear).
you REALLY!! need the sidecar manual here
there is a proceedure to flush the sidecar to match the bike - and that IS the way to go - you flush the sidecar to match the bike by running some huge amount of fluid through the sidecar lines.
the brake line goes over the exh and down from the top - the brake tee points stright up.
also - its not a second reservouir - its the replacement.
doing the setup without a copy of the manual could be dicy at best.
do you have the correct rear brake pedal?? it has to be changed on newer bikes - also there are TWO versions of the remote rez - make sure you have the right one for the year of bike

Yes I have the new brake pedal. I was bit confuse on which manual to buy, the one for the 2005 sidecar or the one for the 2003 roadking?
get the newer - it has all the info into the past.
just make sure you go through the compatibility chart first and deal with obtaining any items needed there - then work your way through the manual
there is a section on installing the "kit" on the bike - you use the section for the right year bike [the current manual has 3 completely different bike sections],
then you find the section for preping your sidecar
then you do the section on attaching the sidecar to the bike
harleys sidecar manual is written so that you always want to get the manual of the NEWER unit, bike OR sidecar whichever is newer. it gives you the info how to make the cross connection over different years.
once the kit is properly installed on the bike - making the bike a "sidecar compatible bike" the attachment amounts to 3 bolts, some plugs, and the brake cable. - 90% of the work and parts is getting the bike to be sidecar ready.

Timo482,
Does that flushing the lines work even if the mc, lines, and calipers have been used with a different fluid in the past? What about flushing the caliper and the mc.
I'm interested because I didn't know that was possible.
Thanks
Thank you very much. I will get the book for the 2005 sidecar then. I have all the mounts on right now. I will try to get the book asap.
Sticks,
I just got the book for the sidecar and it does say that you can flush the line with either or depending on what your bike takes. You have to run a miniuim of 12oz through the system to ensure that it is flushed. THe little 100pg manual was $64.00, but well worth it for the information.

You can use either DOT 4 or DOT 5 for the brake. If your bike was setup with DOT 5, you use DOT 5 in the sidecar. If the sidecar is used, then flush the system and it will be OK.
It's unfortunate that HD has been making so many changes between 2002 and the present. The book is worth the money. You can get them from Zanotti's for 20% off. I buy everything from the internet nowadays. No tax if out of state and the discount pays for the shipping.
06, 07, 08 each have LOTS of changes - 06 all the wire changed, 07 the frame and engine and trans changed, along with some wire, 08 has tank, wire, fuel, throttle body, brakes, lines, brackets.
i keep hearing rumors of water cooled at some point
who knows.
for us sidecar guys - from 06 on the car and the bike have to be just right or spend a extra 2k - i know the next time i trade in the bike - if the cost is less than 3k more to trade the whole rig i will rather than trade the bike and hope the tle will fit
