98 Intruder question

My daughter's boyfriend had a mishap the other day that damaged the tank on his Intruder. He is looking for something larger than stock. I think she is trying to talk him into a hack. He was told there are certain years of VL1400 tanks that fit without modification and have larger capacity. Has anyone tried this and maybe knows what years or models would fit? Or do you know of another tank that would fit without major mods? Thanks
Gee, that "less-than 4 gal tank" on my '96 lets me stop every 100 miles or so to rest my butt. Why would anyone want something bigger?
Hmmm an Intruder tank that's bigger? Never seen/heard of it -- but maybe its out there.

He's 25. He complains that he has to stop more often with his 2 wheeler than Jennifer does with her sidecar rig. Says he only gets about 78 miles of Interstate on a tank. Jennifer can do about 130 with her CX/California
wooo!
I have a 6 gal tank on my /5, along with a 3.5 aux tank [for emergencies..IE no stations around on back roads]
I have about a 300 mile range, but still stop every 100-120 miles for gas. good to take a 10 min break, get off, walk around, go pee, whatever.
You can add an aux tank to your bike easily if you need more range.

No, he has no sidecar, usually has a passenger, and doesn't want to lose what little luggage space he has. Someone told him that some Intruder tanks are larger and will bolt right on. He's trying to find out what year so he can start looking for one. The salvage yard tells me 87 to 95 are interchangeable, but don't know what size they are or if they fit a newer bike.
Hmmm, shows the advantage of "gentle ridin'." I get 110 even with the hack and Luke. Of course, the biggest factor is probably that we're not riding in the city and have very few stops and starts.

Most of his riding is Interstate speeds. And, like I said, he's 25.
wow, 78 miles on a 4 gal tank.. figgers out to 19 Mpg.....I can go 115-120 miles till i hit reserve at 3.5 gal.
if he has 'less than 4 gal the mileage is worse!
seems he needs to learn a little throttle control.
tell us a little more about his 'mishap'..too much throttle?

Riding home in a heavy fog on 19 between Waterloo and Watertown. The bridge is being resurfaced and you have to zig zag through the barricades. The right side has the top four or five inches of concrete ground off. He says he hit a spot of oil or something on a turn and the front wheel slid right and dropped off of the pavement. I doubt speed was a factor, but I wasn't there.
And he says his tank is definitely less than 4 gallons in size. He's second owner. I told him to look for traces of bondo. :0)
oh, boy, thats a rider's nightmare.
I hope he didnt have any injuries.
I hope someone comes up with a bigger tank for him. but still, even at 3 gal, thats only 26 MPG, on a solo bike alone. he should be going at least 100+ miles on it.[unless he has a Valkyrie engine] just kidding of course! ;o)
He's right! Our "Slim-n-Sleek" Intruders only carry 3.8 or 3.9 Gal. That's how she keeps her girlish figure. 😉
