I like the look of Ural/CJ/Dneper style sidecars.
Can this be done?Do I need to change forks,do any frame work?..etc
Im a total newbie to sidecars all help welcome.

URAL/Dnepr cars work well with this bike. You will need a sub-frame to mount it correctly and probably a steering damper if you use the stock front end. Heavier viscosity fork oil and stiffer rear shocks would help also.

Are there any "how to" books out there?
I can pull a wrench but know nothing about sidecars.

I have several friends with sidecars on R50/2 and R60/2s. You have more hp and brakes then them.

Is it enough? The answer depends on what you want to do with the rig. It will be fine for 50-60 mph on back roads. It will be comparable to a Ural and lots of folks are content with the performance of their Urals. It will not be suitable to travel on the superslab. It will be tough to keep up with urban traffic, both acceleration and stopping.

As mentioned you should use subframes for mounting the sidecar to the bike. The steering will be somewhat heavy unless you modify the trail with a leading link or modified triple tree, but at the speeds an R60 will acheive with a sidecar it probably won't be a problem.

Right on this website you can download inforation about installing and riding sidecars. Well worth the timeto download and read.

Is there any info out there on how to make a sub frame?
Are the all common , or are they make specific ?
I saw a photo of one but cant find it again.(should have bookmarked)
As I understand the sub frame bolts to bike, then sidecar bolts to sub frame.
Can I then unbolt the sidecar and ride solo?

Sub-frames are bike(and sometimes sidecar)specific. Many Beemer sub-frames are available from vendors listed here linked to the home page.
If you are a good welder/fabricator you can build your own but most opt for a commercial one. Some bikes will use sub-frame brackets and others will use a full sub-frame.

Here's one I built for a Beemer /7/560 Jawa combo. The same style will work for many sidecars.

heres a pic of the subframe on my /5.
it was made to mount a Terraplane on it but it also works for Velorex, Ural, and MV FII. actually can be made to work on many others.
the front upper strut from the SC is attached directly to the bike frame..the bike frame is stronger there with a crossmember connecting the 2 sides.

the SC can be unbolted, and bike ridden solo, but not reccomended, once you have it mounted, and have the proper setup, with lean, toe-in, fork trail ETC, that makes driving a SC rig much more enjoyable. also , flat tread tires are reccomended for more rubber on the road and longer life.

these mods can be made later if your budget is small, but highly reccomended.
once you drive the SC rig, and practice!!!. I dont think you will want to unbolt it. it is so much more convenient, safer, people friendly!!!
have fun!!

If you browse through the photo section of this websitre you will probably see some for ideas. The subframe serves two purposes.

1. From the sidecar perspective it provides mounting points that are optimal for proper triangulation of the upper and lower mounts between the subframe and sidecar.

2. From the bike perspective it reinforces the frame for sideway stresses and places the load on the strongest parts of the frame. On BMW's it should also distribute the load to both sides of the bike by tying both sides of the frame together where the loads are introduced from the sidecar to the bike.

Usually on airheads the mounting points for the subframe are the engine bolts, the upper neck where the cross piece connects the two sides of the frame and the rear plates that the swingarm connects to.

Your upper subframe under the seat will crack if it is used as a mounting point for your upper rear strut without reinforcement.

To quote Claude: "When in doubt, build it stout" is probably the best advice for designing subframes.

The upright portion of the subframe is bolted to the bikes rear mainframe, then extends back along the bike rear frame, and is bolted to the frame there, and also has a right angle support welded between the upright and the subframe going to the rear.....VERY strong! I have been using it for 4 years with no problemsI had a big Motorvation FII sidecar on it for 2 years.
Claude saw this subframe at the RDV 3, and said it is great.

Over the winter I purchased a subframe from Claude for my K100 bike/MVFII and am riding that now.
I just got done mounting a 2002 Ural SC on the /5 with the pictured subframe..an easy conversion, using the MV mounts.
