Good luck. I feel for you folks in Canada buying stuff from down here. It's bad enough in the U.S.
They are comin up to the plate price wise here in canada for me..Our dollar is worth more, but hd parts are 40% higher...but no shipping costs...im working em..LOl...
You wouldnt happen to have a sidecar parts book showing the rear drum brakes with the part #s would you?
I found a 1985+ service book on ebay, but no parts book for a 1988 TLE..

The sidecar parts are usually in the parts book for the particular year motorcycle. There is no separate sidecar parts book, per se that I've seen, at least. There are some parts and diagrams shown in the sidecar book, but it's not as extensive as the motorcycle book. I'll take a look in my Shovehlead parts book for 1978. I have a fairly good collection....
I'll get back to you later on today.
Thx...yes my 2002 FLHTC service book shows the hack parts, but its too new for the 1988 drum break...
Does the sidecar manuals show how to do all the setup/ adjustments etc?
i havent bought it yet..Part # 99485-89...as i can get a 1990-93 service book for alot less..it should be the same , Yes?

If you will send me your email address by PM, I will send you scans of the three pages from my 1993-1994 HD Parts book for motorcycles that I made this morning for you. There are the exploded view of the drum brake with two pages of part numbers. Unfortnately, the part numbers won't help much since nearly all of them are no longer available except for eBay but it does show how things went together. The sidecar service book from most any year would have all of the necessary adjustments and setup for the sidecars. If you can get one, you'd better grab it as they are going to be in short supply in a while.
In late 1994 they went to single leaf spring to lower the sidecar a bit and in 1998 the frame was changed to add the disc brake. In 2002, they went to standoffs to permit adjustments without removal of the large bolts. Since then, the FL frame has been changes two or three times and, each time, the mounts were changed. Fun, huh?
I await your message.
Thx Man....

You're quite welcome. Look for a service manuial for a 1993-1994 Touring HD. That's got all of the sidecar pictures.
Be careful installing that rear rack if you drill holes. Measure four times and drill once. Also, it's really a good idea to have some large diameter stainless steel fender washers on the outside under the rack and inside at the bolts or nuts. They can crack. I never liked the idea of drilling holes in my baby so I never bought a rack.
Happy Trails!
LOl...Yes, I no..drilling holes..i usually do a whole masking tape fit first, then drill thru tape ..The washers are a great idea...Im curious what all comes with the kit...Did you put the heavy duty drive belt on yer bike?

I'm not sure what comes with the kit. It could be nuts with studs that do through the tub (gulp) or screws that come up from inside.
As to the drive belt, I'm pretty sure that those were for earlier bikes. The later ones like mine have a much larger swing arm with a 1" axle. There wasn't much room left for a belt so they narrowed the belt to 1-1/4".
They are quite string if no burnouts are attempted.
If you drive smooth, you will never have a problem with a belt. I never go on gravel roads, either. They are really bad for a rubber belt drive. One stone and you can pop the belt and then you are in trouble.
Cheers.
Mine has the 1' axle and big swingarm on it..That wa a change for 2002+...i think its an 1.5' belt...Yes, the book says the heavy belt is for up to 2003...Hmmm..
I figured i was buyin this stuff, might as well do it right...I dont do gravel either...hate the dust...LOl...I have had lotsa bikes with belts and never had any issues..most people run em too tight and have problems..too dat i have bought , sold ,built about 350 Hds and buells..currently have 3Hds and a Buell..they have bin a passion for 35 years now...
I think the hack is gonna be fun...Hb

I'm almost certain that the belt on my machine is is 1-1/4" because it was the first year of the narrow one. As you may know by now, HD doesn't specify dimensions in their parts books. (They always want you to buy their proprietary parts, LOL).
They had a lot of broken swing arms when they went to the 88" engine in 1999 on. (P/N 47549-02). The rear sprocket was changed to the narrower one in 2004 (P/N 40217-04) to clear the wider 150 tire that was featured on the 2004 Big Twin FL's. Along with that change, the belt was modified in 2004 to the narrower P/N 40024-04.
So, your 2002 bike has the wider rear sprocket with a 1" axle. I really don't know whether the swing arm was larger or not. The book shows a change in 2004 but it could be something minor, Only Willie G knows for sure and he's not talking. Thus, it's likely that the heavy duty rear belt (if it says that it's good to 2003) would fit. on the other hand, you really don't need it. It's just another nice Harley-Davidson fix for a non-existant problem.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
🙂
GM..i just scored a NOS reverse kit for my sidecar..YES!!!

I presume that would be a Champion. That requires some modification to the five-speed transmission. If it's a Champion, the sector shaft needs to be shortened 1/4" and there is a bit of hogging out to be done on the transmission cover inside. I thought about it and instead had a beer and forgot about buying one.
It was out of my pay grade anyway. LOL
