I took some pictures. I have a bit of movement on the end of the damper where it connects to the metal plate. It's got a washer on top and bottom to limit the movement, though, and it doesn't make any noise.

The outer end of the damper neeeded a spacer and several washers to make it clear the chrome crash bar.

If you get some washers on the inner end, it shouldn't make noise anymore.

I hope this helps.

OK here is what I just did this morning I added enough washers so that the ram would not contact the frame. Its now silent.

Big question is was it ok to use that many washers and of course the next question would be that I did not use the HD washers. The ones i did use had the same ID as the HD one but the OD as you see is a bit smaller?

Same goes for the washer on the bottom of the heim joint that I added it was not a official HD one.

Would anyone venture to guess if this is ok? Or should I order the correct wahsers from HD. In the manual and parts list it calls for 3 washers but I suspect I probably used the equivilant of 4 HD washers.

Tooks the rig out and gve it a test spin and everything seemed ok. Also I gace the heim joint a squirt of HD Cable/Chain lube, I figure that I would not hurt anything.

The next big issue is my jiffystand, as I mentioned my bike is 05 FLRHI Road King. The jiffystand does not have a rubber bumper on it and there was never any place to put one.

So what is happening is that the stand is hitting one of the bolts on my primary and actually when the motor is ideling the stand makes squeeking noises. I did lube the jiffystand with antize paste which did help but there is still the issue of the stand hitting that promary bolt.

Would anyone know if the 05 RK came stock with a jiffystand w/o the affixed rubber bumper? I posted this question on another site and someon replied that HD offerd a rubber bumper that cliped to the bikes frame?

Any ideas?

Many thanks?
John

I know of at least one case where the side stand (without a rubber pad) finally wore through the outer primary and let the oil out. I was riding behind the bike and it made a hellova mess on my windshield and leathers.

I saw these aftermarket bumpers in JP Cycles, they say that they will fit up to a 99
http://www.jpcycles.com/Search/ProductDetail?sku=5300335&Ntt=5300335&Ntk=product_number&Ne=0&N=0&Ntt=5300335&Ntk=sku_search&fitment=1&results=10

WOuld you think it would fit my 05 RK?

You are missing P/N 50245-99A. It's the rubber bumper that slides onto the metal tab that is shown in your picture. That contacts the outer primary. The dealer will have them. It's the cheapest part on the motorcycle. LOL.

As to the washers you have added - as long as the damper doesn't contact the crash bar, it's probably OK. It would be better form to get a spacer with a 3/8" hole of the proper length to replace the washers you've added.

It sounds like you're getting close.

If you look again there is no tab on the kickstand for the rubber tab to slip on to........ The tab you see is you catch the sidestand with your foot, there sould be a small tang on the opposite side of the sidestand where you would install the rubber bumper but as you see there is none.

I suspect that the P.O. put on a lower sidestand.

If I'm wrong about what you mentioned please post a photo of your sidestand.

As far as those washers I will just order the correct ones from HD, i'm plenty away from the crash bar so that is not a issue. The only place it was making contact once and awhile was under the mounting plate and also the lower frame tube coming out of the gooseneck (that would only happen at full turns)

Now everthing is silent, except for that damn kickstand...... 😉

Thanks,
John

Yeah, it could be a replacement sidestand. I'll go look at mine this morning when I go out to the shop and let you know.

Actually, with the sidecar on, you really don't need the stand but I leave mine on for the times when I want to work on the bike and have to put it up on the Handy lift. It's best to leave it in place.

With the stand mounted, you really need the rubber pad to keep it from making a hole in your primary case.

You are 10000000% correct about leaving the sidestand on, if the bike ever went into the shop it would be needed. I did locate the correct HD washers for the top and bottom of the heim joint and will pick up this afternoon.

Also the dealer had a earlier frame mounted bumper 50059-85 in stock (it is around $6) so I will grab that also and give it a try, the parts guy said it may hold the jiffystand out a bit more then stock but again it may not. I suspect eventually I will look for the correct sidestand used.

Thanks,
John

The heim joint rod end (under the triple tree) on my steering damper (w/around 2000 miles on it) seems to rattle a lot. It all still looks new and according to the TLE manual is hooked up correctly.

IS this normal ?

TIA,
John

Sorry, I didn't get a picture yet but my sidestand (2004 model) looks quite a bit different than yours. It has a half-round rubber bumper on it that sticks onto a metal tab. That's on the inside of the swing.

On the outside it a bent V-shaped rod that is for your foot to push the sidestand out.

Your sidestand is either aftermarket or they changed for 2005, which I doubt. The P/N for the whole sidestand kit with rubber bumper and all is 50075-83B. That was a new part when the Evolution motor came out in late 1983.

Good luck.

With some Harley sidecar rigs I have used a plastic wrap tie to keep the sidestand from rattling as many have a stretched spring that won't hold them taut when retracted.

Lonnie,
No I will fix it correctly by replacing the stand with the correct one. Today I went to HD and bough the bumper that sits to the frame on the per 98 touring bikes but on my 05 RK it did not even come close......

So now its off to CL to do some hunting for a use one.

i got tired of the damn thing - i keep the side stand in the sidecar trunk in case a stealer needs to take the sidecar off for service its just in the way and makes noise

takes at least 4 mins to remove it
