Harley 16" rear tire replacement?
I have a Ural mounted to my 2003 Road King. The rear tire (stock HD Dunlop) gies away every 4,000 miles. Can anyone recommend a flat tread car tire or hard compound motorcycle tire in 16"?
Thanks! TEX
You might try a metzler 880 marathon in a bias ply...still a mc tire but I got outstanding mileage (15000/18000) on them on BMW K1200ltc. You might look through sears or another tire shop and look for a car tire that is maybe 5 to 10 mm wider than your current HD tire. I've got a Dunlop sp7000 car tire in a 185/55/16 on my 09 Ultra Classic, however the 09's and up have a wider rear tire stock(180/60/16) than the earlier model bikes. FWIW..
Doc, fantastic recommendations and I thank you! I have access to a contractor who supplies many cities in the Phoenix area with standard and specialty tires.
I sure appreciate your advice. I've been searching for a while and yours is the first cogent advice I've received.
Thanks! Tex
Dunlop E 3 last longer and is what they put on all the new Harley s. Are you sure you have every thing set up properly as I know others running sidecars on Harley s with D 402 and last a good bit longer then what you are getting.
I just asked a friend of mine that has a 1988 FLHS that has a BIG Watsonian Cambridge on it and he runs D402 and gets 6 to 7 K out of his rear tires. Then my friends running Harley sidecars are getting 8K or better out of theirs. I would think with a E3 set up properly you should get 11 to 12K or better.
What front/rear tire pressures are being run? I have an '01 RK with TLE and got 6500 out of my first dunlop.

6500 out of the rear or the front? According to my two TLE manuals they recommend the same in the front as for a solo 36 PSI.
6500 miles is about average for the OEM Dunlop rear skin.

Is this true for the latest tire HD is running the E3 Dunlop for the last couple of years on them? I know in solo form they are getting around 4 to 6k more out of them then the D402 they use to run on the touring models. With the E3 many are getting over 16K in solo form on the rear. When I wear out the set I have now I will be trying a set of the E3.
