Taking the dog for a ride
Loved the video although I didn't watch all the way to the end. I have a Lab and a miniature Weeener Dog....took the Dachshund out for her first ride and she was uneasy but I know she will be ok in a few more times. Have to figure out how to secure her first however. I just bought my rig from "skipam" here on the forum about 6 weeks ago and I can't stay off the thing!! Having a blast, and my wife who has Alzheirmer's Disease is really enjoying it too.

Hello Larry,
I only can advice you that it is definitely necessary to hook up the dogs. Although they learn very fast to keep balance, they do not have enough hold and in a fast bend or at breaking they go over the edge very fast!
Don't put them on a normal neck ledge. but get a chest harness and mount a mounting point below their belly. The line should be mounted close to the inner back seat base and so short that they will not get thrown out. Means just let them reach the right edge. Including if your wife is with the dog together, you need to fix the dogs. The acceleration is even with the Dackel so high your wife will not be strong enough to hold it.
One thing I noticed is that the dogs get so excited that they scratch the paint and pee a little what smells awful. So my next step after the sidecar repair is to make a throw over protector for the seat and their favourite support point the hub (like a kind of huge baseball cap). I think of neoprene which prevents them from slipping and gives some cushion.
The big ones enjoy it when you leave them running beside you. Our Irish Setter bread made even with advanced cancer 35km/h over 2-4km each time we went out into the green.
the small ones are the proudest sidecar OWNERS you can imagine. Up to 60km/h they stand up and enjoy surfing in the wind like the Beach Boys.
Best luck, enjoy and keep your wife active.

Vernon, your gravel roads are smoother then Costarican "High"ways. Our road workers must be frequently high in deed.

Oilman,
I use a harness with a leash from her back to the luggage rack on the bike and another from her collar at the neck down to the nose of the sidecar. She can't really fall out of the car or move too much in any direction. The Doggles protect her eyes. I need to make an easy way to pop the seat bottom out and replace it with a carpet covered deck to give her more room and better grip.
Dave Hooker(MrCob) carries his two weiner dogs in a wire cage, probably a transport kennel strapped in his Ural. That is probably the best way to go.
Hi Sven!
yeah that road isn't too bad, but I did have to edit out the rougher parts because the camera was shaking enough to break up the video.

I've done such with our Texas sidecar by removing the seat and replacing it (2 bolts) with a piece of plywood covered with trunk carpet from the autoparts store, along with a hinged back panel to cover the trunk space required by the single-piece seat in our car. I also bolted an attachment for Maddie's chain to the bottom board with a swivel snap that hooks to the chest of her harness. It surely works better than her riding in the seat. Now if we can ever master the Doggles.

we rebuilt our sidecar especially for the dog...
she wears a harness, with a 1' leash, attached to an eye bolt that is attached to the inside of the sidecar, i have also made a guard, for the bike side of the sidecar, that is attached to the sidecar frame, this guard also has a side hardbag attached ( impossible for the dog to fall / jump out, unless i forget to attach the leash - it happened once ! vid on youtube )
she also has a board she stands on with 2" of padding, so in case she wants to lay down ( that doesn't happen to often though )
we have lots of pics and vids of the restoration, and Savannah riding in her sidecar at www.sidecarsavannah, or on our youtube page www.youtube.com/user/sidecarsavannah
