I've set up a few of them with 562's and the owners were quite happy with them. The 650 one lungers have great low end torque which is what sidehack rigs need to start off easily without excessive clutch slippage.
Not the best freeway rig with that displacement but plenty of power for most roads travelled.

I have a photo of a very nice little Savage hack rig and I'd post it here, but can't figure out how to do it...don't see the commands here.

I owned an '07 Savage for about two months when I first got back into motorcycling again. I'm not a small guy and that bike was straining to get me up to 70mph...BUT, that said, in retrospect, I'm very sorry I sold that bike...it was simply a neat motorcycle with a bunch of low end, like Lonnie says...comfortable, economical and a blast from the past to ride. Had I been smarter back then, I'd of hung onto it and hacked it. It would be a perfect hack rig for local rides, backroads, but the interstate would be nowheresville...

I've been eyeballing a used Savage at a local dealer here...I have the bigger bike, but still like that little thumper...

Lonnie, do they require any special mounts(I have a velorex 700)?

The Savage has a large single downtube that will need a larger U-clamp strap for the front upper strut mounting. This is easily made from a formed and drilled piece of 1/8"x 2" A36 (mild) steel strap stock. You can then flatten the OEM Velorex clamp frame shim a bit to conform with the downtube.
