Sidecar shipping?
Looking to purchase a used sidecar, but I can not drive to get it. The current owner has not either and is not too enthusiastic about it. So I am trying to gather some info to convince him it will be fairly easy on his part. Has anyone shipped one before? With who? Easiest way to do it?
Thank you-andy

Read the whole thread and it will shed some light also some good tips...
Be well... hope this helps... Ara
If you plan to have him ship it, you will have to have him crate it....
If he is willing to crate it then you can ship it via Old Dominion or Yellow Freight .
I have done this several times in the past and is cost effective....
Problem is that he may not want to do all that work on his end.
Good Luck
BTW where is the sidecar located and where is it being shipped to?????

sidecarLenny,
It would be coming from NY, Manhattan by the looks of his area code. Going to Milwaukee, WI. I checked out the following and it looks like they would be door to door? I am not sure he would be excited about boxing.

What kind of sidecar did you buy?

SidecarMike, nothing yet, but looking at a '00 Velorex 562. Price right now is $1000 without shipping. Still seeing if he is willing to ship.
I believe the carriers that mike mentioned will charge the motorcycle rate for just the sidecar alone. They will ship a motorcycle with sidecar for the basic bike rate plus around $195.00 extra for the sidecar.
I have shipped and received sidecars strapped to a pallet and crated by standard motor freight and have received palletized sidecars via Amtrak from as far away as NY (We are in WA). Amtrak does take a while.
Damage factor doesn't seem to differ much either way unless you have a STRONG crate as general freight haulers will stack anything they can to save space no matter how many "Do Not Stack" notices are on the shipment.

I got the sidecar you see here delivered by Eagle One Express. Sidecar by itself- no crating.

I didn't name any shippers. I have a trailer and no job. I always chase the ones I buy. :0) Andy, are you interested in a complete rig? I know of two up here for sale. A Virago/California with updated suspension and an early Goldwing with a Velorex 700.

SidecarMike, Thanks for the tip, but I am just looking for a sidecar right now. Have a bike '83 R80RT. Recently got a new job and $ is a little tight so looking for a used sidecar. Right now works better for me to buy in parts as opposed to buying complete even though might be cheaper in the long run.

I understand.
I'll check with my daughter next weekend when I'm in Watertown. There was a California for sale there last time I was down. I thought I might ride out to Steve's as well if I have time. My oldest grandson is app-earing in a Musical in Watertown Friday night, the daughter is performing in Beaver Dam Saturday night, and my Grand daughter has a dance recital Sunday. Then on to Fondulac to see a brother I don't spend enough time with.
You will get the best price on shipping a bike or side car from Shippingmasters.com..... based on my experience.
I've used Daily Direct for shipping both complete rigs and sidecars alone. They require that the item be in "rolling" condition. The last sidecar is received just had a couple of 2x4s bolted to the bottom of the tub with big casters on them. DD is a good firm, they have a unique operation and all of their drivers that I've met are riders (they usually have their personal bikes in the trailer). Oh yeah, a sidecar from Washington State to Minneapolis cost $425. One last thing, Daily Direct is based in Milwaukee.
Just don't use Federal / Allied for any sidecar shipping
they are the offical MC shipper for AMA
they might do 2 wheels fine ... but they played havoc with my rig
