I know this is a personal opinion topic but I need to know what type people that would use a seat belt for a young'un that needs a car seat...?
Regular car type belt system...? Race harness type of set up...?

Any suggestions...?

Thanks,
Rob

If they are too young or too small to support themselves by bracing, they need a car seat for sure. The attachment of the seat can be by a conventional auto seat belt.
Larger children who cannot support their upper bodies have sometimes used a wheelchair type harness to keep them off the grab-bar or windshield.
A harness with the sub-belt would keep one from sliding out the bottom.
If they are antsy and climb around in the car, strap them in by all means.
Regarding wreck protection, the jury is still out on the value of belts and harnesses as far as sidecars are concerned. It stands to reason that a high budget enclosed sidecar should offer more protection than a low budget open car could provide in a turnover or fender bender. However in a hard collision with penetration or crushing forces involved, perhaps the passenger would fare better if thrown free. Hard to tell which would be the best scenario in all cases. There are too many variables.

My opinion,
Lonnie

The following is strickly an opinion and not based on any known data - BUT -- I find it very difficult to belive that in MOST accidents it is beneficial to be thrown out of or off whatever you're riding. Sure, there are rare exceptions, but I'd sure like to base my decisions on probabilities.

Regular auto seat belts will work for children in car seats, but please do your research on the various models of car seats and get the best you can afford. That's precious cargo you're hauling!

Like the old Bell helmet ad said, "If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet." If you have a $10 kid, tie 'em in with a piece of twine?

Yup, the research has been done on the seat(s)... My wife is an OB Nurse and they supply top line, certified, very good quality car seats to their patients and we buy them from the hospital. We only have the one Grandson so far but have bought all the seats as he has grown and they are good ones. You are correct about the cargo... 😉

Maxwell is a health, capable, not too excitable little boy and knows how to behave.

So, Ok, so I'll go shopping for car seat belts...

Thanks,
rd

Hi Rob, in case you want to visit the Album section on this site and look for photos uploaded by onabender, you will see a picture of my rig and 3-1/2 year old grandson. I have the top of the car seat securely strapped to the luggage carrier on the rear of the sidecar and a ratchet cargo strap that secures the main seat into fixed anchors in the sidecar trunk. The hard part is finding a helmet his size. He is now using his mothers from when she was just a bit older than he is. Hope this give you some suggestions. Jerry Hooker

I have a 3 1/2 yo son and put him in a carseat. I got a high-backed Graco with wraparound sides and used ratcheting cargo straps through the seat and through 2 holes in the sidecar behind the seat (Ural)which were already there. I have no idea why they're there. They seem to have no purpose and are about 1" in diameter. This is very secure. I put him in a kids motorcycle helmet with boots and leathers (just like Dad, of course!) and he loves it! We even put a rainsuit on over the whole deal the other day and ran to Americade with grins and "thumbs-up" all the way from my passenger, despite the weather. Something I, and hopefully he, will never forget.
