Sidecar on a Sportster?
New guy to this....I am thinking of putting a sidecar on my 1200R Sportster. Anybody have any experience with this arrangement? I want to be able to take a passenger along (if you ever sat on the back seat you know it's not really a backseat) and I also have arthritis that prevents me from lifting and lowering my leg very quickly so this looks like a good option to keep riding.
I like the looks of the Escort or Friendship II....any comments on these? Will either work on my Sportster?
Thanks
Frank, Go to the Albums button at the top of the page. Go down to Hack'n pictures. There are several Sportsters there. It will give you an idea of what your Sportster will look like with a sidecar on it. A picture is worth a thousand words. Bob
I have a small Liberty sidecar on an 883 Sportster, and it drives great. I have added some oil to the front forks to minimize diving when braking, and I'm going to put 1200 cylinders on it this winter. Right now, it will do about 70 with me on it alone or 60 or so with a passenger. I have no doubt that the 1200 engine will have plenty of power for me. It will go as fast as I want in fourth, but when I shift to fifth there's no any acceleration to speak of.
I wouldn't want a large or heavy car on the bike - you can see a picture of mine on the gallery under "sporty sportster"

Frank,
If you can make it to the open house at Horsepower Harley Davidson on Satuday September the 23 we will be setup there with some sidecars on hand. If you are not familar with it they are located in Williamspoort Pa. almost right across from Red Lobster. (If I am not at the booth check in Red Lobster...LOL) SERIOUSLY.. we should have our new production sidecar there to display that is perfect for a sportster and will be released after the first of the year.
Look for the canopy with C Stanley MotorSports Corporation on it.
Also feel free to call me if you wish at 570 765 8310 days or 570 837 5182 evenings. Our shop is located in Central Pa. about 50 miles north of Harrisburg in the town of Penns Creek (route 104)
Thanks Claude...wish I could stop by but I need to be in the other direction this weekend (Jersey). Any way I could see a picture of your new sidecar and some specs?
We mount lots of sidecars to sportsters and make bike specific mounting hardware. We have Sputnik, Kenna and Ural sidecars in stock any of which would be a good match up with the Sportster.
Let me know if we can be of help.

Frank,
Will send pics soon. I also have a couple of Sputniks here that may work for you.
You may also want to check out the ad section here and at Hack'd.com. Don't forget shipping costs can be an issue as well as mounts if you need to source them.
B N Touch,
Claude
