And of course everyone knows the difference between a fairy tail and a biker story- A fairy tail begins with, "Once upon a time..." A biker story begins with, "Now this ain't no s**t!" The latter might, just maybe, apply to a few others as well. Fishermen, truckers and more....

I've fixed My harley. It's going to get better gas milage now. I've taken the sidecar off along withn the sub-frame. Going to put it on the Triumph America. Got to call Texas this wee and order a kit. The triump is so lower geared I think it will do good. It has big rear tire just wondering if a car tire will fit?rudyr

Just don't forget to put your feet down when you get on that Harley-- Good meeting you and I guess you didn't buy that Ural sidecar.

No to your queston Joyce. I haven't got to OK City yet. I'm back in the hay field agein. But I do plain on looking at the Ural sidecar. Be a nice ride on the Triump to go look at the sidecar, it's only about 250 miles from me.

I just checked the milage for the first time on my new rig...'85 K100 with EML GT2...ran 100miles at around 80mph with 91 octane...28mpg. I should (and will) slow down. Safer and cheaper (gas+tickets).

Oh My!!! I just read through this thread and discovered that you all are getting from 30MPG at the low end to well over 40MPH on the high end. Ugh. Despair 🙁

I recently did a 900 mile trip in which I got a very consistent 23-24 MPG on the freeway. Around town and for my daily commute I get between 15-16 MPG on a very consistent basis.

Oh well. I have a ton of fun on my commute and plenty of power on the freeway 🙂

Wow..... I was wondering what you have for a tug?? My 1440 cc Harley does between 34- 38 and even the lowly 750 carbed Ural did between 30-33.

Let me preface my response by admitting that I have issues. I tend to push things to far.

In that vein, my tug is a 2300cc Triumph Rocket III. The pushing things to far part comes in with the supercharger that I had fitted. It pushes the HP from around 140hp stock to about 250hp.

I think if I kept my hand off the throttle I would get better MPG, but that's hard for me to do. As I said, I have issues.

So now I have a motorcycle/hack that get's worse fuel economy than my Jeep, but is one heck of a lot of fun to drive.

😉 😉 😉

I'm ok with that.

How was the saying?
Cubic inches can only be improoved by more cubic inches!
That must be a blast to ride and possibly a smeary back tire most of the time with just ticking the throttle.
My dear I cannot even imagine how that kind of engine feels under the butt.
Best Luck

Well I will put my 2 cents in. '91 Springer/Spyder sidecar, stock, 30-32 mpg. Best I can get, and since my tank is only 4.5 gals it makes 100 miles before I start twistin my head for a station. Seems that last little bit of gas goes mighty quick! I have thought about changing this, changing that, but don't think it will help. Got 27,000 miles out of the front tire, 25,000 out of the sidecar tire, and between 5 - 8 thousand out of the back tire, so the alignment is right. Must be the wind.

Hello Larry,
you might try to put a second tank hiding below (better said inside) the sidecar frame. With a small gasoline pump and over flow hose You will be able to astonish every tank station man. And calm down on the road for to concentrate on the landscape.
You get very good milage out of the tires.

After running outta gas once on a cold dark night I decided it was prudent to mount a spare gas tank on my Ural. The Harley has a lighted gauge that seems pretty accurate..... as long as I remember to look.

My tires amaze me too. I try to keep the car aligned and the tires inflated like they are suppose to. I am not an easy rider. The first part of the front tire and side car life was around the 2nd'dary roads of San Antonio. We would ride all the roads we could find, and as it may seem strange I spent some time on 2 wheels as well as three. Some turns surprised me and I ended up "flying" the car. With the power of the HD I can "slide" the front if I want in turns. It is NOT recommended I know, but I never have listened very well. My tires have been Metzler ME880s. The front was wore almost slick, not dangerously slick though, the sidecar tire got out of balance and started a wear pattern I couldn't stop and finally had to take it off because of the noise and shake. I have since started running the "Dyna Beads" and it has helped alot. You can find them online, some shops have them now in stock. They are worth it. They say they won't work in a tube tire, but I have tubes and run them. Not expensive, amount is determined by size of tire, reusable if you want to attempt to collect them from inside when change tires. Flat fix ruins them although this is a BIG assumption, I don't know this first hand. My back tire is a 16" stock HD rim and I can't find a small enough car tire to fit, and putting the pencil to the prices for a new rim vs just changing tire when it is wore out it doesn't seem to be worth it. Would love the straight tread radial but oh well, I like to ride.
The spare gas tank is a definite thought that I have thought about as I run down the road. I started carrying a spare 2 gal tank with me when I travel, but you gotta tie it on, chance getting gas on you, the bike, or whatever is around, and it is a problem for sure. Maybe you just planned my winter project for me. 🙂
Love this site, wonder why I waited so long to get back here???
