safer sidecar
I need a sidecar that has role bars and is safer for my kids. Any ideas?
I've always thought the Vetter Terraplane looked like a fairly good system of passenger protection, however there is no "safe" sidecar when compared to a modern automobile with child seat, airbags etc.
Yeah...."Safer-Sidecar" is an oxymoron.
It's not the motorcycle/sidecar that's unsafe.....it's the idiot who's text messaging, runs a red light and T-bones somebody. A lightweight frame inside the car....like a race car.... would possibly offer more safety than a roll bar.
I'm always aware of the risk when I take kids along for the ride.....I'm MUCH more aware of what other drivers are doing when I'm hauling precious cargo versus being by myself. The safest thing you can do is reduce your speed, which buys reaction time.
my 6 year old daughter rides in my california F1 car ( high sides) in her car seat,..I have teathered her helmet like a Haan's device to prevent neck injury on impact,...the kid'll fair much better then mom and I will,..hehe crawf.
That's a tall order. Seat belts are a waste of time if you don't have a crumple zone between you and the impact. Air bags are not advised for children. I'm not sure a seat belt would be a good idea in a roll over without a full roll cage. I'm sure it could be done, but it would take time and money. NASCAR does it all the time. I saw footage yesterday where the driver hit the wall at 196 mph. The car flipped 6 times after the impact destroying the car. With a little help getting out of the car, he walk on his own to the ambulance. This is the reason the sidecar drivers refer to cars as "cages"
Seat belts are fine in sidecars to keep small children from climbing out or hanging out enough to get a body part damaged from the exhaust, tangled in a wheel or tossed out in a sudden turn, or from rough road conditions.
I haven't heard of any sidecar rollover events regarding children, ever.
Cars are called "Cages" because one is completely surrounded by metal and isolated from the environment around them.
Not because:

This wasn't Joe Sixpack's F150, or Mom's Corolla that was involved here.

I installed a seat belt in the Escort for the grandkids mostly to keep them put in the seat. It has been my experience that most other cage drivers are more curious to check out the sidecar and as such are more courteous. Sometime they come up behind and follow a long time before they pass and almost always signal their intentions and wave. Just my thoughts.

Sorry Lonnie, I guess I wasn't very clear in my meaning. You a stated it
correctly.
I also have seat belts in my sidecar for the kids for all the same reasons stated before. A little safety is better than none.
