Hi everyone. I am participating in a Ride for Kids on June 8, 2008. We will be taking children who have brain tumors or those recovering from brain tumors for motorcycle rides. I don't know all the details like how long the ride is yet, but I do know that the starting point is in Rocky River, a western suburb of Cleveland, OH. We are looking for as many sidecars as possible to take the children who are less stable. My mission is to find sidecarists. If any of you are interested and can participate, please email me: giraugh@sbcglobal.net

Please share this info with any sidecarists who may be interested. Thanks, Marsha

When you are there, look for the white haired guy who looks like he is in charge. His name is Eddie James. Be sure to offer him a ride in your sidecar. He's a HUGE sidecar fan.

Sadly I'm too far away. I'd love to participate in an event like this again, haven't done it for 19 1/2 years.

If that doesn't conflict with MDA camp I will try to make it and bring a few HOG members with me.

that would be great. Just let me know so we have an idea of how many sidecars (and others) to expect. Do they do sidecar rides at the MDA camp? Anything I might be able to help with? Sidecar or therapy dogs?

Marsha, my wife and I have been escorts on this ride the last two years, and plan on going this year also. Ruth, Dave, and there helpers do a great job organizing this event. The ride thru Cleveland metro parks is quite scenic. Black Cherry gl1800 with a silver Daytona 2+2, thats us. If you get a chance do the ride in Asheville NC, outstanding ride to Lake Lure. See you in Cleveland. Jim

Hi: I think this is one GREAT THING to do. In fact there is a few groups who want to do something like it in Southern Oregon. What can you tell me about insurance costs on an individual / group / or combination of the two? Thanks
PS hope this will not steal this thread.

Hello Scott,
that is a new aspect for me: Special insurance for a day event, where the individual vehicle insurance is supposed to cover the passengers anyhow.

I once organized a group tour around with some 80 members and nobody came to the idea of asking this question or announcing it to the police as public activity. =>
=>
=> Did the lawyers become now so obsessive that they want to stick their nose and fingers into everything and everybody's wallet?

In my case to that time a polite question at the town council for to use the public swimming area as final party ground was answered by the official by: "Buddy, its public, just clean up the litter please!"

Best regards
Sven Peter

PS: Count down to the weekend trip towards the Panamanian border is running....

Thanks Joyce for the video. It was great. It makes me even more excited about our event coming up on June 8th.

Insurance is an aspect that many antique auto and street rod groups have faced unexpectedly in the past. What seems almost silly can derail the best intended meet, show or event in a heartbeat. Everything from the use of a name, to supply of insurance for the event can be hounded to the ground in making an event go well when lawyers get involved.

I am wondering about state laws regarding allowing children to ride in the sidecar. I can't seem to see anything addressing such in my own state laws, but I have heard others claim the same rules apply as an auto. Seems a bit of a stretch to have to add booster seats, seat belts and rear facing car seats in a hack, but it is an interesting topic to discuss. Me, I am totally ignorant to the rules on children and babes in sidecars. I generally keep my dogs riding in the hack, so I haven't thought much of anyone else and any rigid rules to adhere to. Anyone know what the law actualy is in Texas regarding such?

I hope the event goes well. Certainly sounds like fun.

I usually have my dogs riding in the sidecar--all three of them. A cop followed me for quite a ways one time, he even passed other cars to stay directly behind me. Eventually, I just pulled over (no lights or anything like that) to find out what he wanted. He thought that I had a child in the sidecar (my dogs' hair was sort of flying in the wind, but they did have goggles on). When he realized that it was a dog(s), he was very nice, but he originally thought it was a child without a helmet which is against the law in Ohio. He was getting ready to pull me over, but I beat him to it.
