G'day,
I have been back into motorcycles for a year and a bit after an 18yr break. I currently ride a 2008 Kawasaki ZRX1200R, a 2008 Kawasaki KLR650 and a 1983 BMW R80ST. I also have my 2002 ZRX which I am trying to sell, I liked it so much, I bought the last new one that was shipped.

I have alwasy been interested in outfits, but never moved on one. I tripped over a cheap outfit the other day, a 1980 CB750K with an Australian made DJP sidecar (Fiberglass, Mini wheel). The chair needs some cosmetic work, but the bike seems ok, 85000 odd kms.

I am thinking the ZRX would be a better tug than the CB750K, especially as I am thinking of getting trailer as well. The ZRX has tunza grunt and 17" mag wheels and the countershaft sprocket is already 1 tooth less.

Having two bikes the same woudl assist logisitcs as well I suppose.

Any ideas? Are there car tyres suitable for the 17" wheels, currently running a 120/70ZR17 M/C (58W) up front and a 180/55ZR17 M/C (73W) on the back(BOTH TUBELESS). The rims are 17x3.50 front and 17x5.50 rear. I have read that it is dangerous to fit car tyres to motorcycle rims and that they have to be turned down. What is involved in this?

Thanks for your help,

Four Fingers.

PS, no pics at this stage, normal computer kaput, hopefully will remedy this tomorrow.

PS, anyone want to buy an 80 model CB750R with a horny custom zaust system? Lots of spares, noiceeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

It is the 15" M/C wheels that are the problem you will be OK.

Yep, it is a CB750K, 1980 model, which is one of the early dohc models as far as I can see.

Now that I have had a chance to really go over it it is looking not so good, lot of work to be done on the bike. Front brake master cylinder looks shot, back brake locking on, pin hole in one of the headers, and a few other things I can't remember at the moment. On top of that it would mean another rego, insurance, etc. I might be better off splitting them and flogging the bike. I could use the R80ST as a tug, which would keep my regos, etc at the same level, but I have a friend who is interested in the Beemer.

The more I look as them, the better the Urals look, all of the work is done.
Four Fingers.

Shaft drive of the beema is a big plus,(Well I think so)and the 850 pulls the chair along nice at 100kph kroozz with the oldgirl and a youngster. very steady and light to ride. stock tires and standard suspention setup. (Beefed up a little.
What Model is your DJP?
What part of OZ are you from. VB, Toohes, XXXX, Red back, Boages, NT stubby???? LOL.

I'm from Bathurst, NSW home of the V8 races :)!!

I didn't realise there were different types, but it must be an early one because it doesn't have the straight upper tie rods I suppose you call them, but has 2x fitting that comes straight out from the bike frame front and back, they have a big nolathane bush up high and then an adjustable piece goes straight down (pretty much) to the slidecar frame. Sort of a cross between the old style mounts and the style used currently.

Email me at fourfingersofdeath@hotmail and I'll send a pic.

What is your set up? What sort of Beemer, etc.

I'm considering selling the lot, my Beemer and a few other toys and getting a Ural outfit. Probably easier in the long run. Probably won't be much different to the Beemer, but will have Leading Link front forks, reverse gear and be all shiny and ready to go. No doubt whatever I do witht the current set up will end up costing a fair bit and I will end up with an outfit that has a bike 30 years old with a fair bit of wear on it and not much poke, no reverse gear or spoofy forks.

Home of all forms of motor racing, "including sidecars" lol
I live in vic these days due to work but grow up in Penrith NSW. Have grown up with Bathurst in my blood. My dad worked for holden and there XU1 came 3rd outright in the 70t's. Dad would pick me up from school (sometimes)in the race car with street tires and trade plates.
The DJP in it's early form had a boot accessable through the folding seat. the later series looked the same from the front but had a boot lid.
It is nice to by a running setup and the ural does look a very nice outfit.
Reverse is a good option.

Yep, I make a different decision every day. Don't know what to do. I should probably sell the outfit and my old Beemer, enjoy the ZRX and the KLR and when my knee finally packs it in, the ZRX off and buy a new URAL. I'm fond of Ruskie bikes, I owned a Dnepir at one stage.

I bought a ChiangJing {not sure if I spelled it right] which is a chinese knock off of the Ural sidecar and mated it to a Yamaha roadstar 1600. In so doing I get comfort yet I get an old school looking rig. The ural rig complete while it is super cool looking, is way over priced and is a maintenance pig. My 2 cents!

I agree. I bought my 2005 Ural for $8K which seemed like a good price, but they are now at $12K and seem overpriced IMO. Another 2 cents .

they are now at $20 grand believe it or not. I have had a Russian Bike, a Dnepir. The problem spots were carbs, brakes and wiring. Apparently these areas have been replaced with Brembo from brakes and Klein I think jap carbs an jap wiring.

I have a Chinese girlfriend who wants me to go to China in July. I could maybe pick up something then.
