New Member with California License Question
Hello all,
Brand new member here. I signed up because I was just given a chinese side car motorcycle Chan Jaing 750.
A friend of mine had it shipped here from China. He was very unhappy with the quality so he told me to come and get it out of his garage.
My question is: Can this bike and sidecar be registered here in California ? My friend drove it in to DMV with the Chinese paperwork and they pretty much told him to get lost.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Many imported sidecar rigs from Russia and China are not USDOT compliant. They are known as "Gray market" vehicles. Without the DOT and CARB certifications you will not be able to use this rig on the California highways.
You may be able to get an offroad permit but no California license without these certifications.

What paperwork do you have? Is it an MSO, Bill Of Sale, other?
You may be able to register it as a special construction.
Where are you located?
I am in California

I must be getting old. I find myself agreeing with Lonnie more and more. LOL.
He's got it right here. The Chinese "gray market" ones aren't going to get admitted to California roads. I don't even know if you could upgrade them without being certified in some way. The former owner of a Honda dealer in my area brought one in and was unable to register it without the certifications even though he had upgraded the lighting and so forth. It sat there for years and I don't know whatever happened to it.
Unfortunately you can't call one specioal construction either. The DMV inspectors know all of the motor vehicles and they aren't easily fooled.

But any of a number of companies can help you affordably mount that sidecar on a different bike. Don't throw it away. 🙂

That's a very creative idea. Put the hack on a licensed bike. That's one of the ironies of California law. They call a sidecar an accessory but if you bring in an uncerfitied rig, it's a motor vehicle. LOL.
Also, strangely, you have to wear a motorcycle helmet when you ride on your rig in California but you don't need a motorcycle endorsement. Go figure.

Like the saying goes: "Youth is fleeting but ugly is forever." more lol
