Insurance coverage questions

I am new to the side car thing and I haven't even mounted mine yet but I was wondering how insurance works on covering a sidecar? Is it covered under the motorcycle. Do you have to let your insurance know about it or is it just covered. Does it raise your payment to the insurance to have the side car? The help would be greatly appreciated. I am sure I will have a few other questions as I go. It is a Hitchhiker by the way. Thanks again

Some insurance companies cover $3,000.00 worth of accessories. A sidecar is considered an accessory in the US and Canada.
Some want extra to cover them and some feel if you have a sidecar attached you are less of a liability.
Ask around.

as Lonnie said, here in Canada, mine was viewed as an accessory to the bike,..be mindfull of " full replacement value" as D. Lloyd can tell ya,..replacement value and book value are miles apart,...I took mine to my agent, allowed pics to be taken, gave a car value of $4000,..and another $1500. for installation,( even tho I mounted it)..giving a value of $5500 on to a $6000 bike,...it costs me $15.00 extra per year,..also I know my passengers are covered, most don't have 3 on the bike,..good luck, crawf.

Talk to your agent. Some companies call it an accessory so you think you are covered, but the fine print say they will only pay 10% of the bike's value for all accessories combined. My sidecar and it's mounting parts are worth more than my bike is so I have stated value coverage.

My Foremost policy has the sidecar as "optional equipment not to exceed $6500".

Welcome to the forums from another Hitchhiker owner. Seems to be very few of us on here and other sidecar forums. I haven't mounted mine yet but my first post does have pics of it. I have to have one mount piece replicated as it has bad threads in it for the adjuster that screws into it.

Thanks everyone for the help. They said they will replace for stated value. My Credit Union was asking for proof of insurance since I took a small loan out on it ($1500) manly to help repair my wife's credit history (co-signer). I will likely have mounting questions in the future. I bought mounts for a Sporster Harley but know might put the sidecar on a 1993 springer soft tail. I can't find how that mounts on to the bike. I will post that in another thread at a latter time when I get time to look more at the mounts. Thanks again for everyones help.

This is a shot of the rear lower mount, front is the same, before I cleaned it up. This will rotate a full 360
% so you have a lot of adjustments that will work. These also slid out or in for front to back and in or out with pinch clamps. In the same shot is the quick dis-connect for the sidecar's brake system.

I'll see if I have a shot of the top turnbuckle adjusters and post it.
