With the riding season almost on us don't forget to make sure the insurance on your sidecar is going to cover everything just in case . Back in September as many of you know i was hit by a girl delivering pizza . i was lucky in many ways because i wasn't seriously injured [bruised badly was all ] . While i did have several problems with my insurance company it all worked out . The saving grace was i added the price to replace my HD sidecar to my accessory insurance . I also added $10,000 medical to my policy .Do Not assume your work policy will take care of a motorcycle accident . I was surprised what a ride in an ambulance for 6 miles cost . X rays and all that fun stuff adds up very very fast. And if there is a lawsuit , you will be in collection before your medical bill is paid . Towing and storage can run up a bill real fast .My towing and storage bill was $1200 because of a mix up with my insurance company .I had towing and storage so they paid that [ whining all the while ] . So i got $3000 for the damage to my bike and $5000 for the accessories . My Medical was paid [$4000 ]. My towing and storage was paid [ $1200 ] .My deductible was $500 . The girls insurance company gave me back my deductible right away when they found out i wasn't going to sue . So while my case is different from every other case make sure you cover as many bases as possible.

Man, I got more than $10,000 accessories coverage on my rig and all the documentation to back it up!

Don't forget to buy lots of UM/UIM coverage. I got clocked by a UIM back in 2006, collected the full $25,000 she was carrying, then collected another $175,000 through the UIM coverage. Took me two years to collect but woulda been sucking eggs without the UIM. I was carrying UIM limits equal to my BI/PD limits and still do (and I carry the maximum BI/PD limit they offer!)

My "new" harley /sidecar i put $7,000 accessory on it . that way if my bike was totaled i would be able to replace the whole set up .i will check my UM/UIM coverage.i plan on looking at all my insurance next month . When i was talking to my insurance company they were surprised what a sidecar cost to repair .

you guys have to specify UIM coverage?? wow!,..our no fault coverage covers all that plus public damage and public liabilities up to $1M,..and full medical no matter what,...fire and theft coverage is optional,..as is the " I'm stupid, I crashed," collision coverage to bike replace under your own dumbness,...I have tested the system 4 times over the many years and have never been at a loss,...read those policies carefully then lads,..cheers crawf.

UIM coverage is the price we have to pay to offset our cheap booze and gas prices on this side of the border.

It all balances out 'EH?

And how much does that coverage cost you? A friend in Thunder Bay who is about my age and rides a rig similar in age and comport to mine pays more to insure it than I pay to put full coverage on two motorcycles, two cars, and the legal minimum coverage on a conversion van.

Well Mike as a 45 yr old man, who has been licenced and insured with the same agent since 16,..clean record,..my rig is insured for $580.00 per year with $1M liabilities,.public damage , uim, full medical and fire/comprehensive " acts of God " coverage,...$40.00 more for theft coverage if I so choose,,..rig is an 02 suzuki with a claimed $4000. chair costing $2000 to have installed ( guessed as I fabd and mounted it all myself) ..older lady who is the insurance agent took photos,..and made note the bike would be carrying all three of us in the event of an accident., and knows full well I.m the mechanic that fab'd the rig,( certified millwright)..not bad as I also have my toy hauler trailer covered for $600/yr full coverage, and my $350 K house for $800/ full coverage and my 06 dually for $850/year full cover,...as the rates are a tad higher than I wish,..I am finding others are paying far more for much less coverage and greater hassles at collection time,,..I have had a couple of incidents thet were caused by others, agent was there and moneys paid out within a few days,..no troubles,....fyi, cheers crawf.

If you think your ambulance bill was excessive, try mine and I don't even remember it.
Ambulance,--750Dollars, Life flight helicopter, --13,000 dollars.
The price of the trauma center and a week or so,(I don't remember much about it), in the ICU was so high I only remember that I was glad the insurance covered it.
Being returned from the dead is very expensive. Try not to go there.

I pay $280 a year for full coverage, roadside assistance, fire, theft, anything. I even have coverage on my shop, itemized, for my tools and such as well as if the place burns down with my bike in it.

But then again I insure my home and everything else with the same agent. Only one wreck in all the years I've been with the company. And that wreck I'd forgot to put full coverage on the bike as it has just come out of winter storage. So for insurance purposes I have had no wrecks or tickets since 1974. The wreck itself was covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs as I am a 100% combat disabled veteran. Except the tow bill of nearly $500.

I'd best check with my carrier to make sure the hack is covered also. Never even thought of that one - -

Be well,
Steve

I got hit by an uninsured crack head who was on welfare. She had nothing, I lost my leg obove the knee and my bike was totaled. due to complications I was in the hospital for almost 3 months. The only thing that kepy me from losing my house was my insurance. I even insure my offroad atv. you can never be too careful when it comes to your families financial well being.

Like i said check your accessory insurance . Since in most cases a sidecar is an accessory make sure you have enough just in case. I dont have my motorcycle insurance with the same company as my homeowners and auto . They are good for my homeowners and auto but they were too high for my motorcycle.
