do you have to insure your sidecar rig as a trike or just as a modified motto?

In my experience, the sidecar is the biggest accessory for a motorcycle you will ever own. If you want to insure it against your own negligence (ie: it was your fault) you can get a stated value policy, but not cheap.

With Bikeline Insurance , from Markel, you just add on the sidecar as an extra accessory, and at a value you state.
I added mine on with a value of $4000,up from $1000 for my old SC, and the additional premium is $13 more.
total cost of my one year policy is $195 , including roadside assistance,[which I used last year for a flat tire..great!!], accessories, and cargo trailer.

My premium with Progressive is about the same. Keep in mind that different areas have different rates, though. Bob and I are both in Wisconsin, though he is very close to Milwaukee and I'm up in the Northwest boonies.
Pay attention to the fine print. My wife was curious about other companies when it came time to renew our policy last June. The Geico agent told her that the company would not allow stated value on the sidecar and said that a 1987 Ural with subframe and mounting brackets is worth only $647.

I contacted the company directly and they told me the dealer was mistaken. They said the sidecar and all other non manufacturer's accessories like Corbin seats and Givi bags combined would only be valued at 10% of the bikes retail value according to the Kelly blue book. Anything above that would need to be "Stated Value" at the cost of $125 per $1000 value. That means the sidecar alone would have added $500 per year to my policy.

A friend of mine claims Geico covered his bikes accessories at replacement value. Get everything in writing!

here's a breakdown of my policy from Bikeline...
$1000 coverage on accessories..ACV
$1000 on my cargo trailer...ACV
$4000 on my sidecar...ACV
and my bike..ACV
premiun for the comprehensive is $51
premium for collision is $76
remainder is for the bodily injury stuff, uninsured , personal prop damage, and passenger coverage....$68
total is $195.
I added $3000 more value to my SC, and it went up only $13.
My wife works at Markel in Pewaukee, but we get NO discount or kickbacks. We just feel it is great coverage and reasonable premiums.
your premium will vary, according to the bike and vaue of SC and accessories, but will still be reasonable. I can attest for the service they provide.
