INFO NEEDED ON OLD SIDECAR RIG

As stated in my first post on this forum "New to Sidecars" I am still after info. My original plan was (is?) to put a Hannigan on my 1999 BMW K1200LT. However, the cost factor may intrude so I am evaluating alternatives.

I just checked out a 1981 Goldwing with Vetter fairing, sidecases and top case and a Vetter (Terraplane)sidecar. The sidecar has a manual adjust for car load and a seperate hydraulic brake. The bike has 26K miles and the entire rig appears to be in real decent condition. The asking price is $4000 and could be bought for a bit less.

Does anyone have knowledge of the value of such a rig? If I bought it and later decided to sell, could I retrieve most of my money? Is there a collectors' market for this set-up; ie: origianl Vetter equipment and sidecar?

Again, all assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks!

These are great rigs for touring or all around usage. If shipshape it is priced right. The '81 to '83 GLs are still one of the most sought after tugs. Quite a few of these Vetter conversions were done with new bikes and they had special Vetter mount sets, bags, fairings, top trunks and matched paint systems. Well balanced rigs with not the most comfortable sidecar seat. Easy in, easy out though.
The main issue with the GLs is that after 50K or so the timing belts must be replaced which is a rather expensive procedure that most shops aren't willing to do during their local riding season since it is not a quick fix.
Sounds like this rig may be a long ways from needing this work performed.
The value is there if in good shape.

Lonnie:

Thanks for the info. This may be the way for me to go as I am brand new to sidecars and it would be much less expensive to start out. The major advantage is that it will be easier to convince the wife to allow me to spend $3500 vs $7800 for a complete Hannigan set up!
