Hi there, we are very new to the sidecar community. We bought this sidecar used, and are curious as to what make/model it is.

I posted a couple of photos of it here.

Any clues?

Dee

It's a HitchHiker, first built in Minnesota then later in Ohio. They closed up shop in the early 90's. A nice sidecar for a smaller bike. I had one on a 1200cc Goldwing, but it was really too light for the bike. I used to have a copy of the install instructions on here, but I think they've been deleted. Send me an email address and I'll forward a copy to you. Keep in mind that it's a big file and will take a while to download if you use a dial up account. Sidecarmike@charter.net

Dee.
Yes , welcome aboard. Be warned though as sidecars can be very addictive 🙂
Sidecar looks to be in good shape in your pictures. What do you plan to mount it on?
The instructions, I think the ones Mike referred to, are posted
at SCT in the files section. Clicking on the link below is the first step to get there. Once on the homepage you will have to get a Yahoo name and password (no biggie) and then join the ISOK(No biggie either and free). Then click on 'files' at the left of the screen etc.
Fly, I was just going to ask if you had read this as you are THE Hitchiker guy amongst us. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/SCT/

claude.... how come i have to be THE hitchhiker guy? why do i always get the blame? ok i've got broad shoulders.
wickedfun... sidecars are fun but can be wicked. down load or order hal kendall's sidecar books availible on this site. download the ural book "driving the ural sidecar motorcycle" same as the "yellow book" cluade do you know the website for this? get the hitchhiker mounting instructions from sct. from the pics it looks as if your hitchhiker is 1990 or older. it should have an air shock and leading swingarm. is the top mount for the shock welded to the fender mount or is it an adjustible clamp? accomplish these tasks then we will decide what to do after lunch. get hack'd magazine and if you haven't join the usca. fly

But..But.. Fly, you are the hitchhiker guru in my mind. Please don't bust the bubble of my image of you. I think you are just being modest 🙂
Oh, If someone wants the Yellow Book (almost identical to the material on the Ural site if it is still there), It is stil advertised at the Dauntless motors site.

Thank you sir, for the wicked fast id!! I spent hours poring over google sidecar images, and never even came close!

I found the install instructions on the Yahoo site (hitchhiker.gif?), and just downloaded them from there.

We are planning to put the sidecar on a 1985 Harley FLTH Tour King 1380cc right now.

Mike if this sidecar is too light for a goldwing wouldn't that hold true for that size Harley?

Hi Claude! Thanks for the welcome. I joined the Yahoo group and downloaded the hitchhiker instruction sheet as instructed. 😉

As I mentioned in the thread above, we are mounting it on our '85 Harley Tour King for me to putt around town on with either one or both of the kids in tow.

Hubby rides a BMW K1200 LT, and I am in the market for a newer travel bike since I sold my 1100 V-Star in August...sigh...long story, but I could never get comfortable on the thing...so until I find my next full time bike, this is my part time solution. I bought the sidecar last year, just to help a friend out of a financial jam more than anything, and we just let it sit...now, time seems right to do something with it.

Ramble ramble, I do tend to chatter...my apologies in advance if you nod off while reading. 😛

ok...ok....jotting notes...ural sidecar book...aka..yellow book, also look for Hal Kendal stuff...got it. Mounting instructions also check...however, Hubby says the lower mounting brackets on our "hitchhiker" seem to be a bit "beefier" than those pictured??

Now then...top mount is welded to the fender mount, but the bracket where the shock actually attaches is an adjustable slidey type thing, with about 2" of adjustment maybe?

Ok, just finished dinner...where to now? 🙂

I would not put it on anything bigger than maybe a Sportster. Even pulling a camper and with my son in the sidecar I had a real problem keeping it on the ground and I am not an aggresive rider. When I spoke to Mr. Williams about this he told me the 1200cc Goldwing was way too big a bike for it. He recommended not mounting it on anything that would, without a sidecar mounted, have a gross weight of bike, rider, and luggage exceeding about 600 pounds.

dazed and confused. not sure about mount is welded but where mounts slides. late 80's had metal strap welded diagonally from rear vertical to top horizontal with a stud to mount the shock. earlier models had a sliding mount on the vertical. paul had a hitchhiker on his personal harley. he mounted mine on my suzi in 90. my inlaws and outlaws live in london,oh so i used to hide out at his shop quite a bit. i have specs if you need them.
